CONTRACTORS yesterday<br />

started laying asphalt for<br />

Sumner’s temporary skate ramp.<br />

It will be installed at 26<br />

Nayland St, which is also one of<br />

the four short-listed sites for a<br />

permanent skate park.<br />

spokeswoman Liza Sparrow<br />

couldn’t say exactly when the<br />

ramp would be up-and-running<br />

as the group was dependant on<br />

volunteer labour. However, she<br />

was hoping it would be operational<br />

by the end of February.<br />

The temporary skate ramp was<br />

formerly located at 36 Wakefield<br />

Ave but was closed in February<br />

last year when it failed to comply<br />

with noise standards.<br />

A SKATE park between<br />

Ferrymead and Sumner is a<br />

step closer with the release of a<br />

shortlist with four suitable sites.<br />

They are Sumner beach next<br />

to the Surf Life Saving Club,<br />

Scott Park in Ferrymead, the<br />

old Redcliffs School grounds on<br />

Main Rd, and the former Marine<br />

Tavern site at 26 Nayland St,<br />

Sumner.<br />

The four were chosen from a<br />

list of 57.<br />

Public consultation on the sites<br />

will take place from <strong>January</strong> 29<br />

to February 26 with a decision<br />

from the Linwood-Central-<br />

Heathcote Community Board<br />

likely in April.<br />

Sumner Green and Skate<br />

group member Liza Sparrow said<br />

it was “really thrilled” with the<br />

sites. They all had merit, she said,<br />

but the group would continue to<br />

support a permanent site within<br />

Sumner.<br />

“It works well with the surf<br />

and skate culture, is also good<br />

for local business and it adds<br />

vibrancy to the area.”<br />

Board member Tim Lindley<br />

said he had no particular preference.<br />

“They would each offer quite<br />

a different experience. It’s a case<br />

of putting these out for consultation<br />

– they’ve all got pluses and<br />

minuses.”<br />

Board member Darrell Latham<br />

said the Sumner community had<br />

warmed to the Nayland St site.<br />

“Sumner locals have wanted<br />

centrality to the village, a place<br />

parents have easy access to. I<br />

think it’s a good site. (Redcliffs<br />

School) also has advantages<br />

being central to the <strong>Bay</strong>s area<br />

and accessible to all residents.”<br />

Matt Cockcroft lives next door<br />

to the former Redcliffs School<br />

site on Main Rd.<br />

He said he would be happy for<br />

a skate park to go there provided<br />

it was in the middle of the<br />

park, visible from the road and<br />

residents could have input into<br />

the design.<br />
