Skate park sites released
Fire rages, homes at risk
UNDER WAY: The foundation
of Sumner’s temporary
skate ramp at the corner of
Nayland St and Wakefield
Ave is being laid this week.
Work starts
on ramp
for skaters
CONTRACTORS yesterday
started laying asphalt for
Sumner’s temporary skate ramp.
It will be installed at 26
Nayland St, which is also one of
the four short-listed sites for a
permanent skate park.
Sumner Green and Skate
spokeswoman Liza Sparrow
couldn’t say exactly when the
ramp would be up-and-running
as the group was dependant on
volunteer labour. However, she
was hoping it would be operational
by the end of February.
The temporary skate ramp was
formerly located at 36 Wakefield
Ave but was closed in February
last year when it failed to comply
with noise standards.
A SKATE park between
Ferrymead and Sumner is a
step closer with the release of a
shortlist with four suitable sites.
They are Sumner beach next
to the Surf Life Saving Club,
Scott Park in Ferrymead, the
old Redcliffs School grounds on
Main Rd, and the former Marine
Tavern site at 26 Nayland St,
Sumner.
The four were chosen from a
list of 57.
Public consultation on the sites
will take place from January 29
to February 26 with a decision
from the Linwood-Central-
Heathcote Community Board
likely in April.
Sumner Green and Skate
group member Liza Sparrow said
it was “really thrilled” with the
sites. They all had merit, she said,
but the group would continue to
support a permanent site within
Sumner.
“It works well with the surf
and skate culture, is also good
for local business and it adds
vibrancy to the area.”
Board member Tim Lindley
said he had no particular preference.
“They would each offer quite
a different experience. It’s a case
of putting these out for consultation
– they’ve all got pluses and
minuses.”
Board member Darrell Latham
said the Sumner community had
warmed to the Nayland St site.
“Sumner locals have wanted
centrality to the village, a place
parents have easy access to. I
think it’s a good site. (Redcliffs
School) also has advantages
being central to the Bays area
and accessible to all residents.”
Matt Cockcroft lives next door
to the former Redcliffs School
site on Main Rd.
He said he would be happy for
a skate park to go there provided
it was in the middle of the
park, visible from the road and
residents could have input into
the design.
People wanting to give
feedback on the sites can go to
