22 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 31 January, 2018 Sporties’ heartfelt tribute to lawn bowls champ Stella McFarlane GLADESVILLE Sporties are mourning the death of champion lawn bowler Stella McFarlane. Stella - one of Gladesville Womens Bowling Club’s accomplished stalwarts - died a premature death from breast cancer after receiving ongoing treatment over the past five years which she endured with great courage and hope. A large contingent of Gladesville WBC members participated in the farewell to their friend and esteemed member at her funeral on January 24. Stella was a lifelong friend of current Gladesville WBC president Lynette Macdonald, having grown up together in Boronia Park where they went to primary school and then moved on to Hunters Hill High School. Both shared many sporting activities over their lives including Physical Culture, netball, touch football and soccer and then moving on to play competitive bowls at Gladesville. During her time at Gladesville WBC, Stella was a winning member of the Pairs, Triples and Fours competitions and late last year clinched the Minor Singles Championship - despite undergoing chemotherapy treatment at the time and playing in a force 10 gale and in chilling temperatures. During 2017 she was also presented with a Merit Pin from Women’s Bowls NSW in recognition of her services to Gladesville Womens Bowling Club. Stella held the position of Secretary until mid 2017 before taking up the role of treasurer and according to Gladesville WBC stalwart Jill Forster was an inspiration to all. Ever obliging, Stella fulfilled these positions with energy and competence but also coupled with a joyful sense of humour. Gladesville Women bowlers formed a Guard of Honour for Stella at her funeral and at her request wore “something pink”. “More than three hundred people attended the funeral at Macquarie Park representing local organisations in which she had participated, not only in a sporting arena but in memorable concerts and reviews over the yearsleaving wonderful memories for her friends and family,” reected Jill. Stella touched many people with her bright and happy personality and was a loyal friend to all of those she loved and cared for. “Our thoughts are with Stella’s family and friends. Rest in Peace Stella.” FLASHBACK: Stella McFarlane (left) being presented with her Minor Singles Championship trophy and badge by President and great friend Lynette Macdonald in October 2017.
