24 selwyn district residents' guide 2017 Hornby to Little River • Little River Rail Trail – 48.4km; six sections: • Hornby to Prebbleton – 3.5km; starts: car park 400m south of Shands/Halswell Junction roads. • Prebbleton to Lincoln – 7km; starts: intersection of Birchs/Trices roads then follows James Street. • Lincoln to Ahuriri Reserve – 10km; follows Edward Street, right at Ellesmere Road then join trail that links to Collins East Road, right at River Road then follow Halswell River. • Ahuriri Reserve to Motukarara – 6km; off-road beside Halswell Canal then on farmland. • Motukarara to Birdling’s Flat – 13km; follows railway embankment beside Lake Ellesmere/Te Waihora and wetlands. • Birdling’s Flat to Little River – 9m; follows railway embankment beside Lake Forsyth/Te Roto o Waiewa, ending at Kinlock Road, Little River outskirts. Kirwee • Kirwee Walk – 40mins; starts: Courtenay Road to Hoskyns Road, up walkway then back to Tramway Road via Reserve. Lincoln • Lincoln Historical Walk – 45mins-1hr30mins; starts: Liffey Cottage, James Street. Prebbleton • Prebbleton Nature Reserve – 20mins (return); around transformed gravel pit where volunteers planted 7,000 natives. Rakaia Gorge • Rakaia Gorge Walking Track – 3-4hrs (return/loop track); follow gorge rim upstream before descending into bush to old Snowdon coal mine site; starts: northern side, Rakaia Gorge Bridge, SH72. Springfield • Kowai Bush Walk – 30mins-1hr (return) through Beech forest; starts: Kowai Road. Southbridge/Ellesmere • Coopers Lagoon – 30mins; wetland lagoon reserve coastal bird view walk; starts: McEvedy’s Road bridge car park. • Harts Creek – 40mins; through native bush and swamp to bird hide; starts: Lower Lake Road car park. Windwhistle • Washpen Falls – 2-3hr (loop track); passes volcanic canyon and spring fed creek to waterfall with views; adults $10/school students $5; 590 Washpen Road. WALKING AND TRAMPING TRACKS TRAMPING TRACKS Springfield to Arthur’s Pass • Helicopter Hill – 4hrs (return); up from Lyndon Saddle along ridge; starts Craigieburn picnic shelter, SH73. • Lyndon Saddle and Mistletoe – 3.5hrs or 3hrs (return, respectively); up Broken River skifield to track then climb to Lyndon Saddle; starts: Craigieburn picnic area. • Camp Saddle Track – 2hrs; track runs through Beech Forest then open tussock to saddle; starts: Broken River skifield road (1km walk to track, opposite tractor shed). • Cass Lagoon Saddle – 2-3 day loop (shuttle required) east of Main Divide; starts: Cora Lynn Road or Cass River. • Hawdon Hut – 1-2 days easy walking to new hut; starts Hawdon Shelter, Mt White Road. • Bealey Spur – 4-6hrs (return); through Beech forest and tussock to spur, ending at historic Musterers’ hut; starts: Cloudesley Road near Bealey Hotel. • O’Malley’s Track – 45mins to Turkey Flat up Waimakariri Valley; starts: bridge, SH73. • Avalanche Peak – 6-8hrs (return); rocky climb; starts: Arthur’s Pass village. • Mount Cassidy Cons Track – 3-4hrs (return); follows ridge to bush line; starts: Devil’s Punchbowl car park. • Mount Aiken – 3-4hrs (return) to bush line via electricity generator used during rail tunnel construction; starts: Devil’s Punchbowl car park. • Temple Basin – 3hrs (return) to open tussock basin; starts: car park, 5km before township. • Otira Valley – 2hrs (return); up alpine valley on northern side of Mt Rolleston, over glacial moraine and through tussock to Otira River footbridge; starts: car park north of summit. • Carroll Hut – 6hrs (return); up through Rata/Kamahi forest then sub-alpine scrub to Kelly Range tussock grasslands; starts: Kellys Creek car park, SH73. • Mt Bealey – 3-4hrs (return); zigzag through Beech forest to main ridge; starts: Rough Creek (south side). Check ECAN’s website. • The Waimakariri River has some safe water holes. Avoid the main channel which is generally unsafe for swimming, as is the case when the river is particularly high. • Lake Coleridge and the smaller nearby lakes or those in the Cass area are generally alpine fed so often quite cold.
