NEWS FROM MERCHISTON COMMUNITY COUNCIL
A recent magazine article about tension between cyclists and pedestrians has resulted
in flurry of emails and phone calls to MCC from local residents. Most, it has to be
said, tell of incidents where speeding cyclists have clashed, sometimes literally, with
walkers. Nobody is suggesting that all cyclists are bad people but David Spaven,
Convenor of Living Streets Edinburgh, writes
“The City Council really needs to make clear that pedestrians are ‘top of the tree’ in
transport priority terms, rather than turning a blind eye to the free-for-all which is
developing on our streets. Pedestrians are also the most vulnerable street users and
they deserve a safe and convenient walking environment.”
The network of cycle paths on The Meadows is one of several local areas where the
two groups do not always co-exist in harmony.
If any reader has a view on the matter, or a suggestion as to how the problem might
be solved, please email MCC Chair Tom Graveson at chair@merchistoncc.org.uk or
phone on 07393 486 097.
Other issues currently under discussion at MCC include a consultation which will be
launched shortly into the City Council’s Liquor Licensing policy. Local residents tell
us that they’d like the way in which liquor licences are dealt with to be more transparent.
People living next door or close to a building where an application has been
made for a new licence or the extension of an existing one should be notified in advance
and have a chance to comment. Again, let us know if you have a view.
MCC’s next public meeting is on Tuesday 20 February 2018 at 7pm in the Merchiston
& Polwarth Tennis & Bowling Club, Polwarth Terrace.
