All Saints Church Thorpe Abbotts Welcome to <strong>2018</strong> All Saints 932nd year having had a mention by name in the Little Domesday survey of 1086. Little Domesday is the first draft or ‘circuit summary’ covering the counties of Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk. Because the information from Little Domesday was never entered into Great Domesday, Little Domesday was kept as the final record for East Anglia. Anyway, enough history. Let me start in the hope that your <strong>2018</strong> will bring you everything you have hoped for. The last few months have seen the Victorian church windows repaired since they were beginning to leak and the supporting bars were no longer supporting! The team undertaking to work had visitors which include the boys in blue who were clearly wondering what a white unmarked van was doing parked next to the porch! I have discovered that the churchyard wall was built in 1857 and so carries the same Grade 1 listing as the Church but sadly it is beginning to show its age. As a consequence, over the next few months we will be taking off the ivy that grows over it to see just how much repair is needed. Constructed largely with lime mortar any repairs will need to happen over the warmer summer months since this type of mortar will not dry out and set in the cold and wet winter period. We may well have a bit of a blitz on the Churchyard over the winter so at some stage we may well come out to the Village asking if you could lend a hand on a morning/afternoon/couple of hours fueled by tea and cakes. As I write tables for the Annual Quiz are going fast, as it will have happened by the time you read this I hope those who came had a very good time. Looking forward we will be having a Race Night once we have been able to identify a good date. So watch this space or more accurately watch the Village Notice Board! 27
