At the same time, these leaking points meant a significant loss of energy and heat, thereby creating enormous heating costs. On the other hand, modern new and renovated structures feature good insulation, tightly sealed windows and (ideally) a construction without any thermal bridges. Heat stays in the room. The insulating effect of contemporary windows is also far superior to those of earlier times. Occasionally, condensation forms on and in the window. Drops may run down it and may damage the structure and can cause the spreading of mold in the living and sleeping areas. However, wrong or absent airing will also put stress on the indoor climate and, therefore, on the quality of life of the living quarters. Moisture, dust or pollutants may concentrate in living space and thereby tarnish the feeling of wellbeing and health in your home. A lack of air exchange will lead to an increase in CO2 and result in signs of fatigue and a decrease in the ability to concentrate. Sufficient and regular exchange of air is paramount for a high quality of air and life. Additionally, proper airing will help to conserve energy and protect the environment, as fresh and dry air heats up much quicker than moist air. In the event that your building/apartment does not feature an automated exchange of air through a (regulated) mechanical ventilation system, please observe the following notes by all means: Tips on proper heating and airing: • Briefly air out the structure every 2-3 hours for hygienic air conditions • If possible, ensure diagonal airing across 2 openings • Airing duration depends on the season. In general: the colder it is outside the shorter the airing duration, as cold outside air only contains minor amounts of moisture and can, thereby, absorb large amounts of moisture. • For the duration of 16 h daily the relative humidity in living areas should not exceed 55% (room temperature about 20°C) and should not exceed a max. 65% for the remaining 8 hours. (Indoor humidity has to be lowered by 1% per °C for an outside temperature under 0°C.) • Rooms have to be heated sufficiently (approx. 20°C), even infrequently used rooms should never fall below 18°C. • Always air rooms sufficiently after producing humidity (showering, cooking, drying laundry, …). We certainly recommend using controlled ventilation systems (centralized or not) for living spaces, as it is nearly impossible to achieve the required air exchange ratios (especially during the night) in this day and age. Controlled heat recovery of ventilation systems adds ideal energy conservation together with the perfect indoor climate and indoor air quality! 6 KATZBECK-MANUAL

6. Care and Maintenance of Wood Surfaces In order to maintain the perfect surface quality of windows and doors as long as possible, we recommend adhering to the following notes on care and maintenance: • In the course of installation protect windows fully from any contact with plaster, mortar, screed etc., as well as from humidity. • Exclusively apply the following approved tapes when covering varnished or well-coated wood surfaces: »» Tesa tape 4438 oder 4838 »» 3M Scotch Brand tape und Brand 2090 »» KIP 308 Special • Tape should be removed cautiously within a period of two weeks. Do not use any sharp objects and avoid cutting on the wood surface. • Any construction moisture must be aired out, being the only effective way to avoid damages to varnish and wood. For “winter construction“ we recommend heating and airing simultaneously (inrush airing). Especially following plaster and screed work airing several times per day is essential! Care of wood windows and doors: An essential ingredient for the longevity of surfaces is regular care of wood windows and doors. The Adler Care Set Plus is a care system based on active cleansing agents and selected resins to be applied to the exterior of wood windows coated in varnish. Care set Care set By applying water solvent varnishes once annually their durability can be extended. Micro fine cracks and pores in the coat of varnish are closed off, the surface can be re-finished any time. Large scale varnished and coated surfaces (e.g. frame profiles of front doors or full structure doors) require the use of the FRONT DOOR Care Set, or else streaking may occur. Maintenance intervals of varnished and coated surfaces: these are very dependent on several factors: Surface color, situation of installation, external environmental impact, intensity of sunshine and weathering ... In order to come up with any care and maintenance intervals, we recommend regular visual inspections of the coating and of the construction joints (max. every 6 months). If any chipping, damages by hail or any other damages have occurred, these should be fixed professionally immediately in order to prevent any subsequent damages.
