National Garden Scheme Opening 2018 The gardening year has started! The first piece of information is that, following the rebranding last year and the rather insignificant posters, roadside and smaller notice board ones, the format is - apparently - going to revert to be more akin to what we used to have! (We’ll have to wait and see) The second piece of information is that, as was mentioned in our ‘Thank you’ piece after the end of the summer openings, Gillian and John Ellson tendered their resignation - having done 10 years. Once again a huge ‘thank you’ to them. The dates for the coming year 2018 for 67/69 High Street are as follows: Sunday 25th February 11.00 am - 3.00 pm Snowdrops and Helebores. Entry includes a ‘mug’ of homemade soup and roll. Sundays 3rd & 24th June 2.00 pm - 6.00 pm. Cream Teas etc provided by St Mary’s Church and the Independent Wesleyan Chapel respectively. Once again there are no ‘scheduled’ Thursday evening openings this year but instead we intend to have ‘Pop-up Openings’ - details will be available on the National Garden Scheme web site ( and we will try to give as much local notice as possible. In addition we are also available for pre-arranged group visits (any number). Please telephone to discuss arrangements 01933 680414 or via the email address you, we look forward to seeing you. Mary & Stuart Hendry Open Church To coincide with the open gardens, the church will be open on Sunday 25 th February 11.00 am to 3.00 pm. Scorrer Organ We are delighted to have acquired a chamber organ to accompany the marvellous work of the choir at St Mary's. The organ is dedicated to the memory of Maggie Groome who was a keen supporter of music in church. Thanks particularly to our churchwardens Jane and Neil for making the installation possible. Some of the funding for the organ came from the legacy left by Rev'd Clifford Scorrer for music making at St Mary's. The organ was built in the early 1970s by Peter Collins (a well known organ building firm) and has spent most of it's life, prior to moving to Finedon, as a house organ in a converted windmill (on the second floor). It is a tracker action, 4 stop, one manual organ with pedals. An interesting feature is middle C being a split point for each stop, allowing the player to select different stops for the left hand and right hand. We will hopefully arrange some organ recitals in 2018 where one or two pieces can be included on the Scorrer organ to demonstrate it's versatility. The ash grill on the front of the organ has been added to prevent prying hands causing damage to the pipes which would otherwise be in reach. We can see over time whether this blends in aesthetically. Jonathan Harris Director of Music at St Mary’s 7
