JUST BETWEEN YOU & ME

JUST BETWEEN YOU & ME “God created man in the image of himself, in the image of God he created him, male and female he created them. God blessed them, saying to them, ‘Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth and subdue it. Be masters of the fish of the sea, the birds of heaven and all the living creatures that move on earth.” —Genesis 1:27-28 2 Celebrate Life Magazine | WINTER 2018 This year, 2018, marks the 50th anniversary of the most important papal encyclical of our time. Its name is Humanae Vitae and its message rings as true today as it did in 1968 when it was written. Simply put, that encyclical drew the proverbial line in the sand by clarifying, once again, that contraception is wrong. Contraception is offensive to God as it confounds God’s plan for marriage and family. So much has happened in the last 50 years to demonstrate clearly that Pope Paul VI was a true prophet when he told us, 50 years ago, that contraception was the gateway to marital infidelity, a lowering of moral standards, growing disrespect for women, and more. As we fight to defend the innocent, we must never lose sight of Humanae Vitae’s teachings, since the killing of the babies will not stop as long as contraception remains popular in our culture. Destroying the ability to procreate children, which is what contraception does, builds a culture of death. We must be the beacons of light. We must be the stewards of the fullness of truth. We must remind our fellow human beings that marriage is sacred and the children that a couple begets are gifts from God Himself. That is our message, for we know, as Genesis teaches, God blessed the first couple. In the same way, He continues to bless those married couples who are open to His gifts. That is the pro-life message. That is the road we must build to reach the culture of life in our land. letters OUR READERS RESPOND God’s Little Ones (Fall 2017) My name is Diane Stark. I’m the author of “God’s Little Ones,” the story about Catherine Jacobs and her hand-made realistic dolls. I met Catherine at a Christian writers’ conference in July 2017. I’d had a miscarriage the previous spring and I was still struggling with the loss. Catherine showed me the children’s book she’d written to explain fetal development to young children, as well as the dolls she’d sculpted. Her dolls brought tears to my eyes. I held a doll that was modeled after a 13-week-old fetus, which was the week I miscarried. Holding that doll was such an emotional experience and it allowed me to grieve my loss. Catherine’s dolls have not only helped countless women, including me, with grieving losses from miscarriage and abortion, but they have been used to educate people about fetal development and have even saved at least one life. It was my honor to share Catherine’s story. Diane Stark | Indiana “Abortion Victim Photos” (Fall 2017) A recent issue of Celebrate Life had an article promoting the use of graphic signs against abortion. I oppose their use but not because I fear controversy. I’ve been praying outside of abortion mills for nearly 10 years, often alone, being cursed at and argued with. I oppose graphic signs because ending abortion requires both hating abortion AND loving unborn children, and if you love someone, you don’t hold photos of them torn apart, that’s dehumanizing them, confirming the other side’s view. Thomas Hughes | Maryland EDITOR’S RESPONSE: Thank you for praying outside abortion mills. We do not think abortion victim photos (AVPs) confirm the other side’s view or dehumanize the aborted victim—quite the opposite. AVPs show the humanity of preborn children while exposing the very real horror of abortion. AVPs have changed hearts and minds regarding abortion; they can be used meritoriously. The article in question covers the effective use of AVPs based on an interview with a seasoned pro-life veteran. A response to “Al Franken, fighting for ‘reproductive rights’ and violating women” (November 17 Editor’s Blog) Wickedness for decades now . . . all of a sudden, so many are being exposed for what they are. EDITOR’S NOTE This year marks the golden anniversary of Humanae Vitae. Originally published in 1968, the encyclical has proven to be prophetic and its tenets ongoingly relevant. Humanae Vitae urgently needs to be taught today. Celebrate Life Magazine will be honoring and promoting Humane Vitae with one insightful article on the encyclical per issue throughout 2018. We begin the new year with Dr. Janet E. Smith’s article, “Humanae Vitae’s golden anniversary,” which offers an excellent overview of the encyclical’s principal content as well as the main reasons why Humanae Vitae urgently needs to be taught today.
