Judie, why does American Life League insist on saying that contraception is the gateway to abortion? © iStockphoto.com/winterling In American Life League’s pamphlet entitled “Contraception and Abortion: The Deadly Connection (CA-TDC),” I wrote that “[a]fter 40 years of killing through surgical abortion and now with the new breed of abortifacients such as RU-486, which are exclusively killers, there can be no doubt that there is a link between contraception and abortion.” Archbishop Charles Chaput taught the truth about contraception in 1998, saying: “A significant new technology does not ‘add’ something to a society; it changes everything—just as a drop of red dye does not remain discrete in a glass of water, but colors and changes every single molecule of the liquid. Contraceptive technology, precisely because of its impact on sexual intimacy, has subverted our understanding of the purpose of sexuality, fertility and marriage itself. It has detached them from the natural, organic identity of the human person and disrupted the ecology of human relationships. It has scrambled our vocabulary of love, just as pride scrambled the vocabulary of Babel.” 1 Contraception has messaged people of every age that pregnancy is a problem, motherhood is a curse, and the only children worthy of the possibility of being born are those whom the mother “wants” to be born. That is the fruit of contraception. That is why we vehemently oppose it and work to undo the evil it has sown into the fabric of our culture. This is why I end CA-TDC as follows: “Pro-lifers must see the connection between contraception and abortion. And we must talk about it, point it out and teach others the truth. Why? Because as long as those who favor unbridled sexuality are in control and as long as we are doing a semantic dance to avoid facing reality, they win. With such chemical killers as the birth control pill, Plan B and Depo-Provera readily available, we no longer dare sit back and say, ‘We are against abortion, but we take no position on contraception.’” Judie Brown is president and cofounder of American Life League and a three-time appointee to the Pontifical Academy for Life. The True Meaning of Human & Divine Love ◆ THE CHRISTIAN MEANING OF HUMAN SEXUALITY Paul Quay, S.J.; Ed. by Joseph Koterski, S.J. Sexual morality can only be fully understood if we understand what our sexuality truly means. Drawing upon divine revelation in Scripture, tradition, the Fathers of the Church, and more, Fr. Quay gives insight into the marriage covenant, shows us what sexuality means in Christian terms, and describes the complementarity of male and female that is psychological, spiritual and bodily. The new material in this expanded edition considers the theology of natural family planning (NFP). CMHS2-P . . . May, Ph.D., Professor of Moral Theology, Catholic University of America ◆ MADE FOR LOVE Same-Sex Attraction and the Catholic Church FFr. Michael Schmitz ather Schmitz presents the Catholic teaching on same-sex attraction and same-sex “sexual” relations. He discusses various worldviews of the human person, the philosophy of nature and purpose, objective and subjective truth, and fallen human nature from Original Sin.
