Parks
No matter what the season, the
Stevens Point Area’s beautiful outdoor
attractions set good times in motion.
In the spring, enjoy the warm sun with
a round of disc golf, or admire the new
leaves as you hike on a scenic nature
trail. Feel some creative energy during
the annual Arts Walk, an event with
musicians, dancers, and art activities.
The Stevens Point Area entices outdoor enthusiasts with a classic mix of scenic trails.
Here are some of the biggest hits:
THE GREEN CIRCLE TRAIL is a 27-mile
trail that circles the Stevens Point Area,
passing the Wisconsin River, Plover
River and other streams. The trailhead
is located at the Schmeeckle Reserve,
a beautiful 280-acre natural area that’s
part of the UW-Stevens Point campus.
THE TOMORROW RIVER STATE TRAIL
features 24 miles of hiking, biking and
horseback riding between Manawa and
Plover. In the winter, it’s a snowmobile
route that picks up in Plover and
Amherst Junction.
THE ICE AGE TRAIL is a thousand-mile
footpath that crosses through Portage
County, offering almost limitless adventure.
STANDING ROCKS COUNTY PARK, just
nine miles east of Plover, has more than
13 miles of rolling trails for hiking
and biking.
BORN LEARNING TRAIL is an interactive
walking trail at Mead Park, just steps from
the popular K.A.S.H. Playground along
the Wisconsin River in Stevens Point.
In the summer, ride one of our
renowned biking trails and on-road
routes. When the leaves turn, take in
the color as they reflect on the area's
scenic rivers and lakes and admire the
massive flocks of migratory birds that
pass through. Head to Altenburg’s
Farm, where you can enjoy their
pumpkin patch and corn maze, or
stop by Casey’s Orchard for fresh,
juicy apples. In the winter, bomb down
Iverson Park’s sledding hills or their
toboggan run. Take a sleigh ride at
Wild West Campground & Corral or
explore our ski and snowshoe trails or
a picturesque skating rink.
Stevens Point
When Stevens Point was founded in 1858, this was
a community of loggers, fur traders and brewers.
The community is still known for its outstanding
beer and so much more: companies such as
Delta Dental, Sentry Insurance, Travel Guard
and Herrschners all call this place home. The
University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point is one of
the community’s treasures. The 400-acre campus
includes Schmeeckle Reserve, the Wisconsin
Plover
Just south of Stevens Point on the east shore of
the Wisconsin River is the Village of Plover. This
charming community is conveniently located at
the crossroads of I-39 and is home to a variety of
retailers and businesses, including O’so Brewing
Company and Great Northern Distilling. The village
also has many great parks and the Korean War
Memorial of Wisconsin at Lake Pacawa.
Amherst
On the banks of the Tomorrow River, you’ll
find the Village of Amherst, a quiet but thriving
community with a very strong sense of place.
Amherst is home to the Tomorrow River State
Trail, Lettie W. Jensen Community Center and
Central Waters Brewing Company.
Other Gems
The countryside is dotted with small communities
like Junction City, Almond, Bancroft, Rosholt,
Nelsonville, Park Ridge, Whiting and Amherst
Junction. The rural Lake DuBay area in northwestern
Portage County offers many recreational
opportunities and encompasses most of the
townships of Eau Pleine, Hull and Dewey.
Fun Facts
The Stevens Point Brewery is one of the oldest
continually operating breweries in the nation.
It was founded in 1857 and once provided beer
to soldiers in the American Civil War. The brewery
survived Prohibition and today it makes a variety
of delicious award-winning beers.
