AMNESIA THICKENS PLOT IN

AMNESIA THICKENS PLOT IN "RING AROUND Early in March, members of the Senior Class, began trying out for their annual play. As soon as the cast and committees were chosen, rehearsal of parts and erection of sets began. Mr. William Browne headed making- up of each character, and Mrs. Miriam Sorrell, with her committees, was in charge of painting- and erecting the sets and publicizing and selling tickets for the play. The play chosen for the 1966 year's production was "Ring Around Elizabeth," a three-act dramatic comedy by Chari Armstrong. Posing as the hard-pressed center of an irritating household was Wilma Bender in the role of Elizabeth Cherry. The eccentricities of the inconsiderate people about her supposedly caused Elizabeth to contract a case of amnesia, much to the desperation of her husband, Ralph, portrayed by Bobby Smith. Due to the nature of the play, there was an unusual number of "character" roles. For instance there was an elderly grandmother, played by Stefani Fouts, whose drink of green tonic and whose feuding with the maid Below: Mrs. G ilpen, played by Susan Lohwasser, sputters a shocked V W e ll!" after being told to leave by Mrs. Cherry, W ilm a Bender. The bewildered M r. Cherry, Bobby Smith, looks on. M r. Browne artfu lly applies make-up to Stef Fouts, while other cast members aw ait their turns. 112

ELIZABETH" kept the audience laughing. Jimmy Cassidy, in the role of the grumpy grandfather was also noted for his idiosyncrasies. Other "character" roles which created comic situations were filled by Frances Nuckols, the illiterate cook; Cheryl Sunn, the fifteen yearold would-be scientist; and Susan Loh- wasser, the old dowager busybody. On the other hand, there were several "straight" roles essential to the plot. Linda Siegfried played the eighteen-year-old daughter of Elizabeth who worries her mother by falling in love with a carefree playboy portrayed by Larry Gunn. In addition, Sandra Alexander posed as a nosey house guest who convinced Elizabeth to take drastic action against the household. In the role of Mrs. Gilpen, Susan Lohwasser played the part of a banker's wife whose continuous talking and constant probing into family affairs eventually drove Elizabeth to order her out of the house. Rounding out the cast were Danny Wayne and Terry Duke, who played the parts of the policeman and the doctor respectively. Jim m y Cassidy as H e rb e rt C herry ignores M ercy, portrayed by Cheryl Gunn and Irene Sandra Alexander, who are tryin g to convince him to leave his receiver fo r a while. 113
