VAR9ITY CAGERS FINISH WITH 15-5 RECORD The highly regarded Springer varsity basketball team opened its 1965-66 season with a disappointing loss to the Black Knights of Lane. The Springers, leading 30-21 at the half, suffered dismal third and fourth quarters, scoring a total of only 14 points. The Knights, putting on a strong fourth quarter rush, overcame the faltering Springers, winning 48-44. The Springers bounced back immediately, picking up their first win against Thomas Jefferson. The Springers, led by Jimmy Peters with 21 points, were ahead most of the way, despite a slow first period. Highland Springs went on to crush Varina, 73-37. Nearly every boy on the Springer squad was given a chance to play; thus, the game provided much-needed experience for many of the newer players. The Springers pushed their winning streak to five straight victories. The streak culminated in an upset victory over previously unbeaten Douglas Freeman. In this game, the Springers were again plagued by one poor period, but managed to make up the deficit, finally winning 60-53. The Highland Springs winning streak was finally snapped by the Hermitage Panthers. The Springers were hit with two poor periods; and despite a fourth quarter surge, they fell to Hermitage, 51-50. Elbert Hodge led the Springers in their next game, a victory over John Marshall, by scoring 28 points. The Spring Front Row Left to Right: Skip Blaska, W ayne Huband, Ricky Ziegler, Ken Coffm an, Chuck Sparks. Second Row Left to Right: Butch Burers, managing to avoid the fatal "bad quarter," whipped Jayem, 88-78. W ith the previous game, the Springers began what was to become a seven game winning streak. Strangely enough, the streak again ended with a victory over Douglas Freeman. It was this defeat which destroyed Freeman's hopes for Capital District honors. Jimmy Peters led the Springers to victory with 21 points. The final score was 75-72. Highland Springs entered the game against John Marshall atop a seven game winning streak. However, injuries and sickness, plus a determined Jayem team, easily overwhelmed the Springers; and the game went to the Justices, 67-44. The Capital District showdown occurred in the final game of the regular season. The Springers needed to beat Lane of Charlottesville in order to tie for first place. However, the Knights of Lane repeated their opening night performance, and soundly defeated the Springers, 84-77. Going to the Capital District Tournament, the Springers beat Hermitage, 66-56, in their first tournament contest. However, fate played an ironic twist in the second game when the Springers were beaten, 79-57, by Douglas Freeman. The final seasonal record was 15-5, with top scoring honors going to Elbert Hodge, 294 points; Steve Harvey, 245 points; and Jimmy Peters, 234 points. rows, Jim m y Peters, Ronnie H ardy, M ike Hardim an, Steve Harvey, Elbert Hodge, Dennis Newcomb, Jim m y Stewart.
