GIB80N AND 80MMA PLAY MUSICAL CHAIRS The role of the guidance department was even more important this year than in the past. With colleges turning away four out of every six applicants, each suggestion and decision of the counselors was an enormous responsibility. In keeping with vocational as well as academic assistance, the guidance department worked closely with D.E., I.C.T., and V.O.T. directors regarding courses and schedules. Mrs. Miller, sophomore guidance counselor, had the task of helping new Springers get adjusted to high school life. One of her major duties was advising students whether to take academic or business subjects during their three years of high school. The junior counselor and newest addition to the guidance stall, was Mr. Nicholas Somma, who spent much of his time conducting college board examinations. Mr. Somma, realizing that technically skilled young men and women are needed as much by industry as college graduates are, worked very closely with members of the vocational training programs. Miss Long, the senior counselor, spent another year of hectic activity analyzing transcripts, recommending colleges to students, and prodding students to apply their abilities. Often, Miss Long had to make students realize their capabilities so they would put their talents to the best use. Her office was hardly ever without a visitor with problems, ambitions, or disappointments to tell her about. Even with problems in vocational training and college applications flooding their every working hour, the counselors never failed to give any student what young people need most, guidance. Mr. Somma explains to a student her abilities and potentials as shown by the "SCAT" scores. 21
