A genuine attitude o f interest and understanding became the trademark fo r C.Y.L. members. Meetings were held twice a month and were centered on programs which complied with the spiritual value o f daily living as well as with the importance o f an honorable character and a pleasing personality. The biggest project was the preparation of the basket o f food which was given to the Christmas M other fo r distribution. in spite o f the small membership, the Highland Springs Christian Youth League did much to create a congenial, Christian atmosphere throughout the Springer halls. C.Y.L. members, Sandra Largen and Jean West, pack the food that was collected by the club for one of their monthly projects. 80

President.................. ...............................................Ted Dempster Vice-President.........................................................George Ashley Secretary .................................................................. Trina Wilson The debate team began the year with a trip to the University of Virginia for a high school debate conference sponsored by the Virginia High School League. The conference included a series o f discussions and a lecture by the sponsor of the U. Va. debate team. The first debate o f the season culminated in a triple victory over Herm itage. Discussing the topic, "Resolved: that the Federal Government should adopt a system o f compulsory arbitration in basic industries," the debators spent hours o f tedious study and practice before this successful trip. Included in the year's curriculum were debate tournaments at the University of Richmond and the C ollegiate School. The month of A p ril brought preparation for the Central Distric t Debate Tournament held at Douglas Freeman High. George Ashley quickly reviews his notes and practices his speech before the club's next debate. Front Row: Gayln Blevins, Esther Cooper, Ted Dempster, Trina Wilson, Pat Edwards.
