BAND SPONSORS VARIOUS PROJECTS FOR NEW UNIFORMS The activities o f the eighty-m em ber Highland Springs High School Band, led by John Saunders, drum major, began before school opened in September. A t special summer practices, band members learned marching and half-tim e drills to be perform ed during the coming fo o t ball season. From the first day o f school, rehearsals fo r the year's performances began in earnest. Aside from the Friday night presentations at the ball games, the band prepared fo r a concert at the first P.T.A. meeting. Football season was hardly over when practices were begun fo r the annual Toy Parade and Christmas C oncert. Before a t tending the D istrict Music Festival in March at which they received an excellent rating, the band participated in a program o f festival music with Fairfield Junior High School. Springtim e brought no relief from the steady push o f the year. Invited to attend the A pple Blossom Festival at W inchester, Virginia, the Springer band once again resumed marching practices. By graduation, their number lessened by departing seniors, the band was still going strong in preparation fo r the commencement ceremonies. In addition to the numerous activities o f the year, the band also launched a drive which it hoped would achieve the eight thousand dollars needed fo r new uniforms. In a sectional rehearsal, the brasses of the band practice their part for the District Music Festival. John Saunders, drum major, directs the band at a dress rehearsal before the Winchester parade. 91
