NEW VOCALIST COMPLIMENTS

NEW VOCALIST COMPLIMENTS DANCE BAND Students interested in jazz and dance band music found Tuesday afternoons in the band room a good place to congregate. Dance band rehearsals led by the school band d i rector, M r. W ade Arledge, gave musically talented students a chance to practice selections by the great jazz musicians. For the first time, not only was an electric guitar added to the usual arrangements o f instruments, but also Miss Linda Poindexter became the group's vocalist. W ith particular and obvious preference to C ount Basie arrangements, the dance band, dressed in white blazers, perform ed at school assemblies and, on Apw'l 16, at the Hotel John Marshall fo r a special program o f music. Though not in the same league with the "Beatles" or "Herm an's Herm its," Springers seemed to enjoy the sounds coming from the dance band. Mr. Gibson, assistant principal, presents a $1,000 check to Mr. Arledge, band d i rector, to help with the purchase of new band uniforms. The Dance Band assembles for a group picture befor6 presenting its annual concert to the student body. 92

In keeping with their interest in sports, the members of the Monogram Club challenged the male faculty to a basketball game at which the club emerged the victor. The club's members also ran a concession stand during basketball games. W ith the profits from these concessions, the club helped to pay fo r letters and jackets presented to outstanding players at special awards assemblies. Terry Mitchell and Steve Harvey collect empty bottles left over from the club's concession stand following a game.
