said.
Hendrickson hopes the book
will showcase the opportunity

people who cannot afford a
college degree. He interviewed
a commander in Portsmouth,
NH that entered the Coast
Guard after dropping out
of college. He has since
completed his undergraduate
degree at Endicott College and
earned a master’s degree at the
University of Massachusetts
– all paid for by the Coast
Guard.
A major focus of the book
is on the women of the Coast
Guard. They fly airplanes,
staff boats and keep the Coast
Guard running. One woman

service after being unable to
pay the tuition to continue her

Scammers use advanced
technology to find phone
numbers and create caller IDs
that appear to be legitimate.
They can create caller IDs that
show they are calling from
the victim’s bank or utility
company.
“They are smooth,” Putnam
said told the Rowley seniors.
For the scammers, “it is a
game. It is a puzzle.”
In the bank scam, the caller
tries to get the victims to
divulge their account numbers
or Social Security numbers.
They may already know the
person’s name and address,
information they can get off
the Internet.
The utility scam, which
reports claim increased by 109
percent between 2015 and
2016, demands payment with
threats to turn off the person’s
electricity or gas.
Putnam said consumers
are wising up to many of
the scams. They no longer

accepting women in the

One story that will be in the
book is how a Coast Guard
cutter captured a smuggler’s
submarine with 6,000 pounds
of drugs.

of the miraculous work of local

Katrina, helping rescue 24,000
Louisiana residents.

The seniors contributed
their own experiences with
scammers. One woman said
she got a call at 4 a.m. Another
caller tried to blackmail her,
saying she had used an adult
sex website. The Newburyport
police caught that scammer
– a 15-year-old boy.
Putnam and Schram said
the oldest scam is someone
claiming to be from the
Internal Revenue Service,
calling to collect back taxes. If
you owe taxes, Putnam said,
you may get a call form a
collection agency, hired by the
IRS, but not until the IRS has
sent several letters.
