February 2018

techerryhill @techerryhill www.templeemanuel.org February 2018 Shevat & Adar 5778 Have you been to Shabbat evening services lately? I’m not judging. I am unable to attend every Friday evening. However, on every occasion that I do attend, whether it’s a large crowd for a special service or a small crowd because of snow, I’m always glad I’m there. If you’ve been paying attention, then one thing you should have learned about me thus far is that I do a lot of introspection. When I attended the URJ Biennial back in December, I had an opportunity to attend a spiritual yoga class that is the inspiration for the Shabbat ShalOM yoga and meditation worship experience that we offer at TE. It was really very meaningful for me. My very close friend, Jess Chasen, who took the class as well, and I sat and analyzed our experience. I shared that, although I understand how many people are moved by praying and worshiping among a huge group of people, I am not. That yoga experience provided me with the opportunity for personal worship although I was in a room with about 70 other people. Often when I attend Shabbat evening services, I sit by myself. Now, of course you usually see me sitting on our bimah, but still, I’m relatively by myself. My own personal worship is what speaks to me. What speaks to you? How do you worship? What’s magical about TE is, you can worship any way you like. Aside from the fact that we have many styles of Shabbat worship experiences throughout any given month, you can attend and make it your way. We offer a jazzed-up, interactive family service; more traditional services; tot and mini-minyan services; and, as I mentioned earlier, a yoga-inspired service. I encourage you to attend. I encourage you to try something new. Maybe you’ll find what speaks to you. See you at Shabbat!
