From the Director
Directing AVENUE Q has been a delightful challenge. In the
thirteen years since it premiered the story, characters and
songs have become an iconic part of the musical theatre
canon. With such a beloved and recognisable show, it has been
difficult to bring something new to AVE Q while still keeping
what people know and love about it. This is what I hope we’ve
done with our production. What I love about AVENUE Q is its
earnestness and simplicity, traits that are inherent in the material
that this show lovingly parodies, SESAME STREET. The creators
of this show - Jeff Marx, Jeff Whitty and Robert Lopez - have clearly
shown their work in the way they capture the spirit of the legendary
show most of us grew up with. However they have also been clever in how
they lampoon and further explore the themes at the heart of SESAME STREET and how they fit into adulthood.
The most important of these themes are the ideas of everyone being special and having a purpose
in life, which are reiterated all through our childhoods, but we often loose sight of when we grow up. The
show understands that these ideals often disappear due to failure, loss and hardship. As such there is
an underlying cynicism to Avenue Q, as we compromise on our dreams or resign ourselves to never even
getting close. Despite this the show encourages us to keep going, as we never know what changes life will
bring, as very few things are certain and almost everything is for now. The only thing we can do is learn
from the lessons life teaches us and grow. All this in a show featuring puppet sex and songs about porn.
I hope you enjoy our production of Avenue Q, and that you have as much fun watching it as we had doing it.
Director: Daniel Cooper
Daniel lost his directorial virginity to WATERDALE last year, directing URINETOWN
alongside fellow WATERDALE alumni Ian Nisbet and Narada Edgar. He has a
long history as a performer, appearing in shows such as INTO THE WOODS
(ACU Performing Arts), SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET
STREET (Altona City Theatre), SPAMALOT (MLOC Productions), PIRATES
OF PENZANCE (WATERDALE), and most notably as Franz Liebkind in THE
PRODUCERS (MLOC Productions). Daniel holds a B.A. (Drama and
Music) from the Australian Catholic University, for which he was
awarded the Justine Witts Drama Prize, as well as an Honours degree
looking at the formation of community within the musical Godspell.
Daniel has also dabbled in writing, with his short play TOP OF THE WORLD
appearing in Shepparton Theatre Arts Group Inc.’s 2013 and 2016 editions of 10 IN TEN.
Musical Director: Shelley Dunlop
Shelley studied Music Performance specialising in voice, and - as a selfprofessed
music nerd - also plays several instruments. She has previously
MD-ed WATERDALE’s PIRATES OF PENZANCE and HAIRSPRAY with BuST
Co, as well as vocal coaching THE PRODUCERS and HAIRSPRAY (Viewbank
College). Shelley was a founding member and arranger for a cappella group
Blue Notion. A dancer from a young age, she currently performs with tribal
fusion troupe ‘A Tribal Mantle’. Shelley has played in many an orchestra pit and
has appeared on stage in shows such as INTO THE WOODS (WATERDALE), FID-
DLER ON THE ROOF (BABIRRA Music Theatre), FAME THE MUSICAL (Camberwell
Youth Theatre Inc.) and LES MISÉRABLES (Croydon Parish Players).
Producer: Stephanie Black
Stephanie commenced her theatrical journey last year performing in
WATERDALE’s RAGTIME, and has since become part of the WATERDALE
family by joining the committee. Stephanie has also appeared in THE
MERRY WIDOW FROM BLUEGUM CREEK (Diamond Valley Singers Inc),
where she got to play her first supporting role as Mabel - one of the Ambassador’s
cheeky secretaries. She didn’t stop there, going straight into Nova
Music Theatre’s production of GREASE, and she has just finished working
on WATERDALE’s PIRATES OF PENZANCE. When she has finished producing
AVENUE Q, Stephanie will be taking on the role of Mabel (anyone else seeing a
pattern here?) in Lumina Theatre Co.’s inaugural production of FAME THE MUSICAL.

MEET THE CAST
Wade had a big year in 2015, making his musical theatre debut as part of the ensemble in SPAMALOT
with MLOC Productions. He followed this up with his first supporting role in the Australian Premiere
production of FIRST DATE THE MUSICAL as Reggie/British Guy with Have You Seen It Productions at
Stageworx, where he received rave reviews for his performance. Wade is extremely excited to be part of
this production as he has been a big fan of THE MUPPETS and fascinated by puppetry since childhood.
Kate Monster, Lucy the Slut
Sarah has trained in classical and musical theatre voice, and studied Actors
Process at Sixteenth Street Actors Studio. Previously, she’s been seen as
Boyka in EUROBEAT (Supa Canberra), Beth in Jeff Wayne’s WAR OF THE
WORLDS (Supa Canberra) and Mrs Lyons in BLOOD BROTHERS (Queanbeyan
City Councill). Sarah has played this role in AVENUE Q twice before –
in 2011 with Supa Canberra and most recently in Trifle Theatre Company’s
highly acclaimed, sell-out production at the 2015 Melbourne International
Comedy Festival. Sarah will next appear as Dr Charlotte White in “I Miss The
War” by Melbourne filmmaker Andrew Walsh Films, due for release this year.
Nicky, Trekkie Monster, Bad Idea Bear, Newcomer
Andrew is a familiar face around the Melbourne theatre traps, having been involved in the
industry for over 20 years. Andrew and his creations have appeared in shows such as
AVENUE Q (Nicky/Trekkie Monster, Puppet Designer and Co-Producer, Trifle Theatre
Company), WALKING WITH DINOSAURS: THE LIVE EXPERIENCE (Hatchling Lead/
Baby T-Rex, Creature Technology Company), LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS (Plant Puppeteer
and Designer, WATERDALE), BROADWAY STITCHED UP (Co- and Puppetry
Director, SLAMS MTC), INTO THE WOODS (Milky White, WATERDALE), and I SING
(Charlie, Old Paradians’ Theatre Company). Andrew was nominated for ‘Best Supporting
Male’ at the 2011 Lyrebird Awards for his performance as Nicky in SLAMS
MTC’s AVENUE Q, and received a Judges Award in technical excellence as the production’s
Puppet Designer. He currently performs with the Camp Qualitypuppet program.
Kathleen Fong is a graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of
Music, The University of Sydney, where she majored in voice.
Kathleen’s days are filled with all things fun and vocal, as she
teaches singing as a profession. Musical theatre performances in
Melbourne include playing the role of Gigi in Nova Music Theatre’s
2012 production of MISS SAIGON, and OTG Theatre’s CINEMAT-
IC BROADWAY in 2015. Kathleen is the vocalist for Kissed by Katie, a
(currently defunct) six-piece band working in styles as diverse
as jazz through to pop/rock. When not teaching or performing,
Kathleen is actively involved as a singer at City on a Hill: Melbourne.
AVENUE Q marks Jesse’s fourth WATERDALE show in a row, after appearing in RAGTIME as
Henry Ford/an assortment of characters, URINETOWN as Senator Fipp, and PIRATES OF
PENZANCE as the Sergeant of Police. Jesse is no newcomer to the theatre world, having performed
in many amateur productions both in the ensemble and in lead roles. Highlights for Jesse
include playing Cornelius Hackl in HELLO DOLLY (Diamond Valley Singers Inc), Professor Bhaer in
LITTLE WOMEN (Oxagen Productions) and a Protean in A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY
TO THE FORUM (Phoenix Theatre Company Inc). Outside of theatre, Jesse was recently awarded the
Herald Sun Young Leader Pride of Australia Award (2015) for his campaign against Domestic Violence.
Sasha has been a performer from a young age, having performed in some
of Australia’s biggest venues in corporate act GH Band. Sasha spent a
few months in New York in 2010, where she starred in commercials,
cable TV shows and attended workshops with some of Broadway’s biggest
stars. Since her return home, she has starred in several musicals including
JEKYLL & HYDE, SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN, ALL SHOOK UP (all with ARC Theatre),
RENT (BuST Co), GYPSY (WATERDALE), and SPAMALOT (MLOC Productions).
Last year Sasha was a part of the Australian Premiere cast of Have
You Seen It Productions’ FIRST DATE THE MUSICAL as Allison/Google Girl.
Bad Idea Bear, Mrs. Thistletwat

(Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Tasmania), BACK TO THE 80S (The Old Nick
Company) and Luna Lovegood in the Australian Premiere production of HARRY:
A VERY POTTER MUSICAL (Knack Productions). Bianca also featured on both stage and
screen in Uni Revues LARAGEDDON and MOONAH FOMA (also for Old Nick). Bianca
studied acting at COOPER SCREEN ACADEMY and sings with vocal coach Lisa-Marie Parker.

Jake has been working hard in theatre in recent years. He was a vocal coach for productions of
HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL: ON STAGE!; DISNEY’S THE LITTLE MERMAID JR and also directing
HAIRSPRAY JR with KIDZ ACT. Last year, he returned to the stage playing the role of Prince Herbert
in MONTY PYTHON’S SPAMALOT with MLOC Productions. Jake has a habit of jumping into
WATERDALE shows at the last minute after recently appearing in THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE
this past March. After AVENUE Q, Jake will be portraying the role of Simeon, in Aspect Inc’s
upcoming production of JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLORED DREAMCOAT.
