WORLD AUTOMOTIVE
Pickup trucks remain popular
among car buyers
Pickup trucks have long been among the most popular vehicles
sold, and Statistica states the number of new pickup trucks
sold in the United States continues to grow. Between 2015
and 2016, 2.7 million pickups were sold, and some 2.24 million
of those were full-sized pickups. According to the data and statistics
site GoodCarBadCar, Canadian sales of pickup trucks jumped by
8 percent in 2016, equating to roughly 27,000 additional units sold.
A recent study from the Automotive News Data Center found the
big three pickup manufacturers, which include Ford, GM and Dodge,
sell an average of 6,500 trucks every day in North America. The
automotive news resource The Drive points out the Ford F-150 has
been the best-selling truck for 40 consecutive years.
While the popularity of pickup trucks may be evident to today’s
motorists, just who is behind the wheels of those trucks may come
as a surprise. According to a recent study from MaritzCX, covering
the 2016 model year, more people from affluent families are opting
for pickup trucks than economy cars. The Ford F-150 was the most
popular vehicle among households earning more than $200,000 a
year. Jeep Grand Cherokee, Honda Pilot and Jeep Wrangler were
also tops among high-income Americans.
Other factors also may be contributing to the popularity of pickup
trucks. A survey from Insure.com asked 2,000 licensed drivers ages
18 and up to rank the kinds of vehicles driven by the most attractive
members of the opposite sex. The survey found that women prefer
drivers of black pickup trucks.
Motorists who have never before driven pickup trucks but are
mulling whether or not to join the truck-loving masses can consider a
host of factors as they begin looking for trucks.
• Size: Pickups are larger than many other vehicles and tend to be
heavier. As a result, when driving a pickup, leave more space for
braking and do not tailgate.
• Blind spots: Because pickup trucks are longer than cars, they may
have larger blind spots. Drivers should adjust the mirrors to diminish
as much of their blind spots as possible. Also, give ample notice
when changing lanes or making turns.
• Reverse: Upon purchasing a pickup, first-time truck owners may
benefit from practicing driving in reverse so they can grow accustomed
to doing so in a truck.
• Hauling gear: Be sure to properly restrain items that are hauled in
the pickup truck bed, or invest in a bed cover so nothing is lost and
safety is not compromised.
• Inclement weather driving: Pickup trucks have very little weight in
the back when their beds are empty. This can cause trucks to fishtail
on wet or snowy roads. Alleviate this by placing some sandbags in
truck beds before driving in poor weather.
Pickup trucks are among the most popular vehicles on the road,
but drivers may need to alter their driving habits when operating
them.
January 2018 Weather –
The month of January 2018 opened with
rather severe arctic outbreak of cold. New
Years day failed to get above zero for one of the
coldest New Years of record and that night our
coldest temperature for month at minus 24 degrees
occurred. Of note though was no temperature
records fell though close. If it was not for
a warming planet , this particular cold stretch
would have likely set records. Below average
temperatures lasted the first week before a large
scale weather pattern change occurred bringing
moderation and mild intrusion for the 12th of
the month where reading reached 53 degrees
the warmest of the month.
Sharply colder temperatures followed with
another arctic outbreak though not extreme.
Milder trends developed generally near normal
in temperature. More temperature oscillations
occurred the last week and half of the
month. Between the arctic outbreaks and the
equally strong mild intrusions, January averaged
7/10ths of a degree above the 1981-2010
baseline.
Precipitation ended up very close normal
for the month of January, with combined rain
ice and snow at melted precip at 2.53 or about
103% of average. Snowfall was limited in January
with the biggest snowfall just 6.5”. Lots of
rain and sleet fell with the warm intrusions of
air setting up the region with about 1 to 2 ½
inches ice which had caused many slip and falls
and numerous broken bones muscle strains. In
recent years we have seemed to require the use
of chains studded tires and wearing crampons
to safely get around outside. Dogs also suffered
the same fate but with better stability using 4
legs.
Overall – storms during January 2018 were
nothing extreme but there were many freezing
rain events with each mild intrusion.
Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide (CO2)…
January measurement for Carbon Dioxide
CO2 was 408.05 ppm as measured at the Mauna
Loa Observatory. Highest-ever daily average
CO2 at Mauna Loa Observatory 412.63 ppm
back on April 26th, 2017. Expect this chemistry
measurement of the atmosphere to continue
to skyrocket in the northern hemisphere
winter into March and April likely setting new
records.
Normal or reasonable CO2 for a stable optimum
climate is 350.0 parts per million but most
of the Holocene era when civilization evolved
and the climate was stable between interglacial
periods had carbon dioxide measurements at
280 parts per million. Those days are long gone
and humans have without any doubt caused
this.
Fifth Annual Empty Bowl Benefit
Homemade soup served in handcrafted ceramic
bowls will be the highlight of the Fifth
Annual Empty Bowl Benefit, a fundraiser for
the Vermont Foodbank, on Sunday, February
18 at the Mud Studio in Middlesex from 4:30-
6:30pm. With hundreds of bowls made by
area potters for the benefit, the Empty Bowl
has become a celebration of the caring community
of Central Vermonters gathered for
one winter night among the potters’ wheels to
enjoy an evening of camaraderie, live fiddle
music, a silent auction of locally made crafts
and a steaming bowl of soup, all to help fellow
Vermonters in need.
The soup is accompanied by crusty bread,
tangy Vermont cheese, flavorful hummus,
baked goods and cider, all donated by local
businesses, and for a $25 donation to the
Foodbank, guests not only enjoy a hearty
meal, but get to select a bowl of their choice
to take home. Last year’s Empty Bowl Benefit
raised $10,000 or 30,000 meals for our neighbors
in need. So come on down to enjoy it all
and support the amazing work of the Vermont
Foodbank.
February is Donate Life Month at CVMC
The University of Vermont Health Network
– Central Vermont Medical Center (CVMC),
in partnership with New England Donor
Services (NEDS), marks Donate Life Month
in February.
The observation remembers those who
have given the gift of life through organ and
tissue donation and celebrates recipients living
more healthfully as a result of that choice.
Ongoing awareness campaigns through
CVMC continue urging Vermonters to consider
becoming donors.
2017’s awareness efforts earned CVMC
national recognition for promoting enrollment
in state organ donor registries. CVMC
was recently among a select group of hospitals
earning bronze recognition for support of
a campaign sponsored by the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services’ Health
Resources and Services Administration
(HRSA). HRSA’s Workplace Partnership for
Life Hospital Campaign added more than
400,000 donor enrollments nationwide.
“There are more than 5,000 New Englanders
waiting for life-saving transplants,” said
• • •
Penny Lowery, RN, who leads CVMC’s
organ donation awareness efforts.
“Committing to be an organ donor is a generous
decision that can save the lives of up to
eight individuals, and even more if a donor
can give corneas and tissue. By choosing to
become a donor, you have the power to
donate life.”
Did you know:
• More than 120,000 men, women and children
in the U.S. — 5,000 in New England
— are waiting for life-saving transplants?
• Every 12 minutes another man, woman or
child joins the national waiting list?
• An average of 22 people die each day waiting
for their transplant?
• Tissue donations help more than 1 million
individuals each year?
• Heart valve, bone, skin, tendon, ligament
and corneal donations provide new chances
for health and sight?
A stable climate enabled the development of modern civilization,
global agriculture, and a world that could sustain a vast
population. Now, the most comprehensive “Reconstruction of
Regional and Global Temperature for the past 11,300 Years” ever
done reveals just how stable the climate has been — and just how
destabilizing manmade carbon pollution has been and will continue
to be unless we dramatically reverse emissions trends.
Researchers at Oregon State University (OSU) and Harvard
University published their findings recently in the journal Science.
Their funder, the National Science Foundation, explains in
a news release:
With data from 73 ice and sediment core monitoring sites
around the world, scientists have reconstructed Earth’s temperature
history back to the end of the last Ice Age.
The analysis reveals that the planet today is warmer than it’s
been during 70 to 80 percent of the last 11,300 years. Over the
last 5,000 years, the Earth on average cooled about 1.3 degrees
Fahrenheit — until the last 100 years, when it warmed about 1.3
degrees F. In short, thanks primarily to carbon pollution, the
temperature is changing 50 times faster than it did during the
time modern civilization and agriculture developed, a time when
humans figured out where the climate conditions — and rivers
and sea levels — were most suited for living and farming. We are
headed for 7 to 11°F warming this century on our current emissions
path — increasing the rate of change 5-fold yet again.
By the second half of this century we will have some 9 billion
• • •
people, a large fraction of whom will be living in places that simply
can’t sustain them — either because it is too hot and/or dry,
the land is no longer arable, their glacially fed rivers have dried
up, or the seas have risen too much. We could keep that warming
close to 4°F — and avoid the worst consequences — but only with
immediate action.
This research vindicates the work of Michael Mann and others
showing that recent warming is unprecedented in magnitude,
speed, and cause during the past 2000 years — the so-called
Hockey Stick — and in fact extends that back to at least 4000
years ago. Lead author Shaun Marcott of OSU said the paleoclimate
data reveal just how unprecedented our current warming is:
“It’s really the rates of change here that’s amazing and atypical.”
He noted to the AP, “Even in the ice age the global temperature
never changed this quickly.”
It’s the rate of warming the matters most, as one climate scientist
points out in climate change “speed kills”
The key take away is that the rate and magnitude of recent
global warmth appears unprecedented. We know that there were
periods in the past that were warmer than today,
Katharine Hayhoe, an atmospheric scientist at Texas Tech University,
told the AP: We have, through human emissions of carbon
dioxide and other heat-trapping gases, indefinitely delayed the
onset of the next ice age and are now heading into an unknown
future where humans control the thermostat of the planet. Unfortunately,
we have decided to change the setting on the thermostat
from “Very Stable, Don’t Adjust” to “Hell and High Water.” It
is the single most self-destructive act humanity has ever undertaken,
but there is still time to aggressively slash emissions and
aim for a setting of “Dangerous, But Probably Not Fatal.”
Vermont Weather Trends – February
Projected February temperatures are slightly above normal for
our region with both cold and warm anomalies predicted. The
coldest weather pattern for temperatures to stay below normal
was across the Upper Midwest and northern Plains. Just north of
this colder strip were temperatures well above normal and finally
well below normal for the northern Hemisphere only in Greenland
which will be good for Greenland.
Both rain and snow storms were expected February probably
leaning more in the way of snow than rain, but latest model
trends keep mild intrusions in the offing as temperatures across
the south will remain climatically warm.
Storm tracks were likely to continue coming out of the British
Columbia region into the lower Great Lakes and either north or
through New England. A track south of New England would lock
in colder air more snow. A track to the north of New England features
warm intrusions followed by arctic chill and leads mostly
to ice and not snow.
Model have been unreliable recently on future projections
much passed a week out, so take this with a grain of salt. Climatologically
February can feature some very big snows storms and
we are likely overdue. February can also develop elongated high
pressure systems associated with modifying arctic air that bring a
string of frigid night and moderately sunny days.
