LAKES ON ELDRIDGE DOLPHINS 19 TH SEASON 

The Lakes on Eldridge Dolphins Swim Team will begin their 19 th 

season in 2018! We are again recruiting enthusiastic swimmers 

ages 5-18 looking to have fun this spring and summer. (Swimmers 

should be able to swim the length of the pool by the end of the 

second week of practice.) 

LOEST is a voluntary recreational swim team operated for Lakes 

on Eldridge and surrounding neighborhoods. LOEST encourages a 

competitive swim team environment and provides the opportunity 

for growth, training, enjoyment, good sportsmanship and participation 

to all active team members. LOEST cannot function without 

parent involvement, so each participating family is required to fulfill 

a volunteer commitment. It’s a great way to meet other families 

and adults in our community.

LOEN Ladies Club Open 

to all Lakes on Eldridge North Ladies 

Ladies our club is a great place to meet your neighbors and make new 

friends. Whether you are new to LOEN or an established resident we welcome 

you to check us out! The club has several social and game groups 

that meet monthly throughout the year. In addition, we hold five general 

membership meetings yearly. Some activity groups meet during the day 

and others in the evenings, to try to accommodate the differing schedules 

of our members. Our groups are Angels on LOEN, Bridge, Daytime Book 

Club, Evening Book Club, Brunch Bunch, Bunco, Dinner Club, Explorers and 

Girls Night Out. We also facilitate a Men’s Group for LOEN Men. 

If you would like more information or are just not quite sure that you’re 

ready to join, then contact us for more information via email or ask how you can attend one of our activity groups as a visitor. Then, if 

you like us, you can join the Ladies Club! Remember that visitors are always welcomed at our general meetings and new members are

BOY SCOUT TROOP 609 

Boy Scout Troop 609, consistent of boys with Autism, which meets the 1 st and 3 rd Saturday of each month at the 

West View School. We meet at 9:30-11:30 AM. They go camping, earn service hour. Last month we helped at 

Wreath Across America at the Houston National Cemetery.

Cook over medium-low heat, whisking constantly, until the mixture almost 

comes to a simmer and thickens, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and 

black pepper to taste. 

Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook fettuccine in boiling 

water, stirring occasionally, until nearly cooked through, about 7 minutes. 

Drain. 

Stir parsley, 1 cup of Parmigiano-Reggiano and cream mixture into the 

pasta. Remove from heat, cover and let sit for a few minutes until thick. 

LIGHTER CHICKEN FETTUCCINE ALFREDO 

You could make this on National Fettuccine Alfredo Day February 7 th ! 

INGREDIENTS: 

2 large boneless skinless chicken breasts 

2 cups low-sodium chicken broth 

4 cloves garlic, minced 

ground black pepper to taste 

2 cups heavy cream 

2 egg yolks 

salt to taste 

1 pound fettuccine 

1 sprig chopped fresh parsley 

2 cups freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, divided 

DIRECTIONS: 

Combine chicken breasts and chicken broth in a saucepan over medium-high 

heat. Bring to a boil, cover and reduce heat to low; simmer for 5 

minutes. Turn breasts, cover and simmer another 5 minutes. Remove from 

heat and let sit with the cover on for 15 minutes. 

Remove chicken breasts from the broth and set aside to cool, reserving 

the broth in the saucepan. Once the chicken is cool enough to handle, cut 

into bite-size slices. Return the chicken broth to medium heat and cook 

until reduced to 1 cup. Stir garlic, black pepper and heavy cream into the 

reduced broth; bring to a simmer and remove from heat. 

Whisk egg yolks in a bowl until smooth. Beat 1 tablespoon of the warm 

cream mixture into the eggs until thoroughly incorporated; repeat until 

about 1/2 cup of the warm cream mixture is used. Whisk the warm cream

Fold chicken and 1 cup Parmigiano-Reggiano into the pasta mixture to

CREAM CHEESE BROWNIES 

You could make this on National Cream Cheese Brownies Day Feb. 10 th ! 

INGREDIENTS: 

1/2 cup all-purpose flour 

1/2 teaspoon baking powder 

1/4 teaspoon salt 

1/3 cup semisweet chocolate chips 

5 tablespoons shortening 

1 cup white sugar 

3 eggs 

3 tablespoons cream cheese 

2 teaspoons vanilla extract 

1/2 teaspoon almond extract 

1/2 cup chopped almonds 

Cream Cheese frosting - optional 

DIRECTIONS: 

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease 9 inch square 

baking pan. 

In top of a double boiler, melt chocolate chips and shortening, stirring 

frequently until smooth. Pour into a large bowl and mix in sugar, cream 

cheese and eggs. Stir in vanilla and almond extracts. Gradually mix in flour, 

baking powder and salt. Fold in almonds and pour the batter into pan. 

Bake for 35 to 40 minutes in the preheated oven, until toothpick inserted 

near the center comes out clean. Let cool in pan before cutting into bars. 

Add Cream Cheese frosting if desired. Source: allrecipes.com

New Orleans estimates that Mardi Gras generates over

CHO’S TAE KWON DO CENTER 

Ash Wednesday is an integral part of the Lenten 

season in many Christian religions including 

Catholic, Orthodox and some Protestant 

religions. Lent is a religious time period of 

40 days before Easter Sunday focusing on 

prayer, penance, and a renewal of faith. For 

the leap year of 2012, the number of days 

between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday 

total 45. If the year is a non-leap year, the 

number of days between Ash Wednesday and 

Easter Sunday total 44. There is a difference 

of approximately 6 days between the 40 days 

of the Lenten season and the actual count of 

44 days (45 in a leap year). The difference lies 

in the history of the season of Lent. 

Ashes used on Ash Wednesday 

The use of ashes on Ash Wednesday is derived 

from Biblical history. In Job 42:4-6, Job 

answers the Lord by saying: “Hear, and I will 

speak: I will ask thee, and do thou tell me. 

With the hearing of the ear, I have heard thee, 

but now my eye seeth thee. Therefore I reprehend 

myself, and do penance in dust and ashes.” 

Also, in the Book of Judith 9:1-2, it states 

“And when they were gone, Judith went into 

her oratory: and putting on haircloth, laid 

ashes on her head….” There are many other 

references regarding the use of ashes during 

penance found in the Bible such as Judith 

4:15; Isaias 58:5; and Jeremias 6:26. 

In the Catholic religion, the ashes used on Ash 

Wednesday are remnants of the palm leaves 

distributed from the prior year on Palm Sunday. 

Catholics keep the palm leaves throughout 

the year and return them to the Church 

before Ash Wednesday of the next year. The 

leaves are then turned into ashes for use in 

the Ash Wednesday services. During the service, 

the parishioners proceed to the front of 

the church and the ashes are placed on each 

person’s forehead in the shape of a cross. The 

ashes are not to be washed off but are to remain 

on the forehead throughout the day of 

Ash Wednesday. 

Other religions that use ashes on Ash Wednesday 

include Lutherans and Episcopalians. The 

use of ashes in the United Methodist services 

“became part of our official worship resources 

in 1992 when General Conference adopted The 

United Methodist Book of Worship.” 

Three Pillars 

The focus, beginning on Ash Wednesday, is 

to seek penance for sins of the past and to 

renew the relationship with God through the 

three pillars of the Lenten season. The three 

pillars are prayer, fasting and almsgiving. 

Prayer is to allow people to focus or meditate 

on many aspects of their personal lives and to 

also pray for others. 

Fasting is to assist in “developing self-control. 

It is often an aid to prayer, as the pangs 

of hunger remind us of our hunger for God.” 

Fasting also assists in the changing of behavior.

to God.” When reading Isaiah 58:5-8, it 

states 

“Is this such a fast as I have chosen: for a man 

to afflict his soul for a day? is this it, to wind his 

head about like a circle, and to spread sackcloth 

and ashes? wilt thou call this a fast, and 

a day acceptable to the Lord? Is not this rather 

the fast that I have chosen? loose the bands of 

wickedness, undo the bundles that oppress, 

let them that are broken go free, and break 

asunder every burden. Deal thy bread to the 

hungry, and bring the needy and the harbourless 

into thy house: when thou shalt see one 

naked, cover him, and despise not thy own 

flesh. Then shall thy light break forth as the 

morning, and thy health shall speedily arise, 

and thy justice shall go before thy face, and the 

glory of the Lord shall gather thee up.” 

Almsgiving is a continuation of prayer and 

fasting. It is a time to be thankful for all that 

God has given us. It is also a time to care for 

others as God cares for us. 

Around the world, Christians unite on Ash 

Wednesday by focusing on the rejection of 

sin, the renewal of faith to Jesus Christ and 

the renewal of life with God. Ash Wednesday 

is the beginning of the Lent season where, 

in St. Matthew 6:1-34, Jesus talks to all people 

on how to act when giving alms, when 

praying and when fasting. The people are 

to be humble, to show penance, to do these 

actions for the love of God, not for individual 

notoriety. The remembrance during this 

season is to search in each individual’s soul, 

to turn away from self-centeredness, and to 

become renewed in the relationship each has 

with the Lord. The beginning of the Lenten 

season, Ash Wednesday, is the beginning of a 

fresh start with the Lord through spiritual and 

religious meditations.

10 TH ANNIVERSARY SALUTE TO OUR HEROES GALA 

On February 3, 2018, the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF) will 

celebrate the 10 th Anniversary of the Salute to Our Heroes Gala at the 

Omni Hotel Houston Westside. North Cypress Medical Center Hospital 

is the Missing Man Underwriter for this gala honoring the brave men 

and women who have served to protect our freedom and liberty. The 

evening includes a Missing Man Table and Honors Ceremony to honor 

our missing loved ones (or missing comrades in arms, for veterans). 

Salvatore “Sal” Giunta, former U.S. Army Staff Sergeant, is the evenings 

guest speaker. Giunta was presented with our nation’s highest military 

decoration-The Medal of Honor-for his heroic actions during combat in 

the Korengal Valley of Afghanistan on October 25, 2007. His courage and 

leadership while under extreme enemy fire were integral to his team’s 

survival and led to his selection as the first living recipient of the Medal of 

Honor since the Vietnam War and the eighth service member to receive 

the nation’s highest military decoration for valor in Iraq and Afghanistan. 

CFEF was established in 1970 as a non-profit to raise money to fund 

a scholarship for high school graduates in the area. Over the past 47 

years, the Foundation has grown tremendously through the efforts of 

the Board of Trustees and the generosity of the Cy-Fair Community. 

The Foundation has awarded over $7.5 million in scholarships to 

1600 graduating seniors. CFEF is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, all 

contributions are tax deductible, as allowed by the law.

Due to the massive flooding the Katy 

community experienced as a result of 

Hurricane Harvey and the continued efforts 

to recover from the devastation it caused, 

the Reign Over Cancer (“ROC”) Walk has 

been postponed until Sunday, February 

25, 2018. The walk will be held at Cane 

Island and will begin at 2 PM. Plan to stick around after the walk to enjoy 

complimentary food and beverages, music and family-friendly activities. 

The ROC Walk will recognize people in the community currently 

undergoing cancer treatment, highlight survivors and raise money 


to fund GEST Foundation grants. Register as an individual or a team

Please be respectful of community grounds and neighbors’ yards. If 

your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. 

Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It 

may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show 

your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community.

found on their website and updates it twice daily. If you have lost 

your pet, please check this website, www.hcphes.org/vph. 

Have you lost a pet? 

Start your search immediately, don’t wait to make flyers. 

Contact all possible animal control or animal welfare agencies in 

the area. Visit each location at least every other day. 

Call your pet’s veterinarian and the microchip company to make 

sure they have current contact information for you. A citizen may try 

to call the veterinarian’s office or microchip company themselves 

from your pet’s tags. 

Call all the veterinarians in your area to alert them to the description 

of your lost pet in case someone brings it to their clinic. 

Check with your neighbors, especially families with children and 

ask if they’ve seen a pet that looks like yours. 

Search your neighborhood on foot, your pet maybe be nearby but 

is injured and unable to get back home. 

Leave a towel or article of clothing with your scent on it outside of 

your home. Your pet may be disorientated and will be attracted 

by your scent. 

Have you found a pet? 

First, think of the animal as lost and not abandoned and make every 

effort to reunite the animal to an owner. 

Contact the HCPH VPH office by telephone and report the animal 

as found. 

Bring the animal to the HCPH VPH facility or check with a local 

veterinarian to scan the animal for a microchip. 

Return to the place where you found the animal and put up a found 

pet poster near that location. 

If you find the owner, especially off a newspaper or website posting, 

ask them to provide a picture of the animal and meet in a public 

place like a police station.

A microchip is a small device (size of a grain of rice) that is permanent 

and implanted with a needle under the skin of pets. 

Pets do not have to be given any pain medication or anesthesia to 

implant a microchip. 

Microchips are not likely to move or need repair if implanted correctly. 

Microchips, when scanned, show a unique code. The microchip 

must be registered with the corresponding microchip manufacture 

to record any owner and animal data. 

Microchips do not work like GPS locators or LoJack and cannot give 

a signal to find the location of your lost pet.

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. 

While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running 

at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many 

children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could 

result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. 

Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be 

kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris 

County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized 

to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat nor to allow 

any dog or cat to become a stray.” 

Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog 

or cat under the following circumstances: 

1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in 

length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable 

of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 

2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 

3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does 

not have access to sidewalk or street.” 

While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you 

work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly 

restrained. 

Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place 

for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not 

only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, 

but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or 

possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet. 

Please remember that cats fall under the same laws as dogs and 

must be licensed and kept restrained when not on the premises 

of the owner. We’ve been told that spreading moth balls in flower 

beds might keep cats away.

Heart disease is the number one cause of death for both men and 

women in the United States. It is an equal opportunity killer which 

claims approximately 1 million lives annually. 

How to Reduce Your Risk 

1. Choose a Heart Healthy Lifestyle. 

• Engage in regular moderate aerobic exercise for at least 

30 minutes five days a week or more vigorous workouts 

at least 20 minutes three times a week. 

• Adopt a diet low in salt, saturated and transfats and high 

in unsaturated fats (fish, avocado, etc.) like the 

Mediterranean Diet. 

• Maintain a normal body weight with caloric adjustment. 

• Take fish oil supplements. 

• Avoid smoking and recreational drug use. 

• Imbibe no more than ½ to 1 alcoholic beverage per day. 

2. Know and review your risk factors with a trusted physician. 

3. Your physician may recommend medications to control 

cholesterol, hypertension and diabetes. 

4. High-risk individuals should consider taking a daily aspirin. 

5. Avoid hormone replacement unless you have severe 

menopausal symptoms. 

6. In selected cases, it may be necessary to conduct non-invasive 

or even invasive tests to determine the nature and severity 

of the heart disease. 

7. Sometimes angioplasty/stenting or even bypass surgery may 

be needed if you have severe and symptomatic arterial 

blockage. 

8. Learn CPR. 

COMMON RISK FACTORS FOR HEART DISEASE 

Age 

Heart disease can occur at any age. However, four out of five people 

who die from coronary heart disease are aged 65 or older. The risk of 

stroke doubles with each decade after the age of 55. 

Gender 

Men and women are equally at risk for heart disease, but women tend 

to get coronary artery disease an average of 10 years later than men. 

The risk for women increases as they approach menopause and continues 

to rise as they get older. Death rates from heart disease and stroke 

for women are twice as high as those for all forms of cancer. 

Family History (Heredity) 

Presence of heart disease in a parent or sibling, especially 

at a young age, increases your risk of developing heart disease. 

Smoking 

Smokers are twice as likely to suffer heart attacks as non-smokers, 

and they are more likely to die as a result. Smoking is also linked to 

increased risk of stroke. The nicotine and carbon monoxide in tobacco 

smoke damages the cardiovascular system. Passive smoking may also 

be a danger. 46 million Americans (25 million men and 21 million women) 

smoke. Women who smoke and take the oral contraceptive pill are 

at particularly high risk of heart disease and stroke. 


Cholesterol 

The higher the blood cholesterol level, the higher the risk of coronary 

heart disease, particularly if it is combined with any of the 

other risk factors. Diet is one cause of high cholesterol – others 

are age, sex and family history. High levels (over 100 mg/dl) of 

LDL (low-density lipoprotein), or “bad cholesterol”, are dangerous, 

and low levels (under 40 mg/dl in men and under 55 mg/dl in 

women) of HDL (high-density lipoprotein), or “good cholesterol”, 

increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. High levels (over 150 

mg/dl) of triglycerides (another type of fat), in some, may also increase 

the risk of heart attack and stroke. Nearly 40 million Americans 

have high cholesterol levels. 

High Blood Pressure 

High blood pressure (over 140/90 mmHg and over 130/80 mmHg 

in diabetics) increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, aneurysm, 

and kidney damage. When combined with obesity, smoking, high 

cholesterol or diabetes, the risk increases several times. High 

blood pressure can be a problem in women who are pregnant or 

are taking high-dose types of oral contraceptive pill. 72 million 

Americans over age 20 have high blood pressure. 

Physical Inactivity 

Failure to exercise (walking or doing other moderate activities for 

at least 30 minutes five days a week or more vigorous workouts 

at least 20 minutes three times a week) can contribute to an increased 

risk of coronary heart disease as physical activity helps 

control weight, cholesterol levels, diabetes and, in some cases, 

can help lower blood pressure. 

Obesity 

People who are overweight are more likely to develop heart disease 

and stroke, even if they have none of the other risk factors. 

Excess weight causes extra strain on the heart; influences blood 

pressure, cholesterol and levels of other blood fats – including triglycerides; 

and increases the risk of developing diabetes. 66% of 

Americans over age 20 are obese. 

Alcohol 

Small amount of regular alcohol consumption (1/2 to 1 drink per 

day for women and 1-2 drinks per day for men) can reduce risk 

of heart disease. However, drinking an average of more than one 

drink a day for women or more than two drinks a day for men increases 

the risk of heart disease and stroke because of the effect 

on blood pressure, weight and levels of triglycerides – a type of 

fat carried in the blood. Binge drinking is particularly dangerous. 

Drug Abuse 

The use of certain drugs, particularly cocaine and amphetamines, 

has been linked to heart disease and stroke. Cocaine can cause 

abnormal heartbeat which can be fatal while heroin and opiates 

can cause lung failure. Injecting drugs can cause an infection of 

the heart or blood vessels. 

Diabetes 

The condition seriously increases the risk of developing cardiovascular 

disease, even if glucose levels are under control. More 

than 80% of diabetes sufferers die of some form of heart or blood 

vessel disease. 

Previous Medical History 

People who have had a previous heart attack or stroke 

are more likely than others to suffer further events. 

Stress, Depression, Anger/Hostility 

Stress, depression, and negative emotions have also been 

linked to an increased risk of heart disease.

CFISD Continues Growing Collaboration With City Of 

Houston For See To Succeed Initiative 

Following a very successful first year, CFISD bussed even more students 

- approximately 1,600 - to the Berry Center from January 8 th -11 th for 

free comprehensive eye exams and eyewear provided by the Harris 

County Health Department’s See to Succeed program. The See to 

Succeed program partners with several organizations and community 

volunteers throughout the area to organize weeklong vision clinics 

for students between the ages of 6 to 18 who have not passed statemandated 

vision screenings initiated by school nurses. 

Transporting CFISD students to the clinics presented logistical and 

scheduling issues, but See to Succeed acquired mobile vision exam 

equipment. That allowed team members, volunteers and vision 

professionals to travel and establish more remote locations. 

And in the case of CFISD, that meant setting up the program at the Berry 

Center. Approximately 400 students per day were examined and fitted 

for glasses over the four days at no cost to participating families. Due to 

the increase, a separate See to Succeed program will be set up at Fiest 

Elementary School to serve the high demand on that campus. The total 

increased from the roughly 1,100 students that participated a year ago. 

Consent forms to participate in the program were sent home via school 

nurses for those students who failed the vision screenings on campus 

multiple times or were deemed as needing an examination. 

According to Bevin Gordon, CFISD’s director for health services, 

approximately 5,500 students within the district will fail the statemandated 

vision screening each year. And from those, roughly half 

would not get a professional eye examination to address the issues. 

Each day of the four began with eligible students shuttled by CFISD 

buses to and from their campuses to the Berry Center. Upon arrival, 

See to Succeed employees and volunteers greeted the students and led 

them to the auditorium for registration as well as distributing stickers 

for each to help identify students throughout the day. The process was 

broken down into stations, including pre-screening rooms and waiting 

areas, before each student would ultimately visit with an eye doctor. 

Stations included distance acuity, color, stereo, near point of 

accommodation and conversion, slit lamp, auto refraction and 

refraction, optical frame selection, check out and data entry. If a 

student needed an immediate referral or follow-up consultation, 

program workers were ready to call parents and guardians. Three 

urgent cases were caught in the first two days. 

The entire screening process lasted between 2-4 hours per student. During 

their time at the Berry Center, students were accompanied by CFISD clinic 

assistants, who joined them as chaperones. Breakfast and lunch were 

provided to students by the CFISD nutrition services department to ensure 

meals were not missed as a result of a student being at the Berry Center. 

The partnership with CFISD and its personnel made the four-day operation 

a smooth success, said See to Succeed Manager Patricia Watson. 

More than 200 employees from Watson’s team joined many volunteers 

to make the program run as smooth as it does. Participating students 

will have eyeglasses delivered to their home campuses in roughly four 

weeks, a part of the process almost more rewarding as helping each 

student through his or her exam. 

The See to Succeed program has been in operation from its primary 

Heights location by the City of Houston Health Department since 

2007. Since its start, the program has screened more than 22,000 

children and distributed over 19,000 glasses to those in need. See to 

Succeed program partners include the Houston Department of Health 

and Human Services, University of Houston, San Jacinto College, 

Berkeley Eye Center, public and private schools, as well as community

Cy-Fair High School students, staff, fans and community 

members lined the parade route. 

The Cy-Fair High School football team was honored and celebrated 

for winning the 2017 Class 6A Division II state championship, as the 

school, alumni and community members came together for a parade 

on January 12 th and rally that followed at the high school football field. 

The Bobcats captured the state title with their 51-35 win over Waco 

Midway on December 23 rd at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. Cy-Fair 

was the third football program in CFISD history to reach a state 

championship game, but is the first in the district to win it all. 

Cy-Fair fans and community members lined Cypress North Houston 

Road, where the parade began near the high school baseball field. 

Following a turn at Telge Road, hundreds of students and staff from 

nearby Lamkin Elementary School and Arnold Middle School cheered 

on the parade as well. Three vehicles from the Cy-Fair Volunteer 

Fire Department carried the football team, while coaches, student 

trainers and other program personnel rode in other vehicles. 

to congratulatory speeches by the high school administration, 

Pustejovsky offered thanks to not only his coaches and players, but 

the community in helping the Bobcats win the championship. Each 

member of the football team, film crew and athletic training staff was 

then introduced. 

Ray Zepeda, CFISD director of athletics, closed the rally by presenting 

the state championship trophy to the Bobcats with the crowd giving 

a raucous ovation. “It’s good recognition for our players because they 

did accomplish something that very few people get to do,” Pustejosky 

said. “I’m very proud of them.” 

The Cy-Fair Air Force JROTC, marching band, Brigade drill team and 

cheerleaders also took part in the parade. Cy-Fair Head Football 

Coach Ed Pustejovsky and his wife Marianne served as the parade’s 

grand marshals. 

“It was a time to be able to bring our staff, our students, our alumni 

and our community together to savor the moment and celebrate 

this historical event,” said Cy-Fair Principal Ana Martin. “I’m still 

processing it all and what it means to Cy-Fair High School and what 

it means to Cy-Fair ISD. We’re just so proud of the hard work of our 

football team, our coaches and our staff.”

the stands and cheered throughout the ceremony. In addition

ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICE

Ash Wednesday is the first day of the Season of 

Lent occurring forty days (excluding Sundays) 

before Good Friday. It is traditionally a time 

for worshippers to gather together with penitent 

hearts to have their foreheads marked 

with a cross of ashes in an act of penance and 

contrition before the Lord. On Wednesday 

evening, February 14 th at 7 PM. we will be 

having an Ash Wednesday worship celebration. 

This service will include the marking of ashes 

on each worshippers head followed by a quiet 

time of reflection at the altar. In addition, as 

we do each Ash Wednesday service, there will 

be something “extra special” to illustrate God’s 

forgiveness of our sins. Special music will be 

provided by the Chancel Choir. This will be a 

meaningful service and everyone is invited to 

attend. 

ST. CUTHBERT CHURCH 

SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE SUPPER 

You are invited to St. Cuthbert Episcopal 

Church’s Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on 

February 13 th from 5:30-7 PM. We will eat pancakes 

and play bingo! Shrove Tuesday originated 

during the Middle Ages. Food items like 

meats, fats, eggs, milk and fish were regarded 

as restricted during Lent. To keep such food 

from being wasted, many families would have 

big feasts on Shrove Tuesday. The English tradition 

of eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday 

came about as a way to use as much milk, fats 

and eggs as possible before Ash Wednesday 

began. In France, the consumption of all fats 

and fatty foods on this day coined the name 

“Fat Tuesday” or Mardi Gras. 

ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICES 

You are also invited to the Ash Wednesday 

services at St. Cuthbert Episcopal church on 

February 14 th at 6:30 AM, 4:30 PM and 7 PM. 

All services have Holy Communion and the 


imposition of ashes. The 4:30 PM service is 

designed for children and their families. Ash 

Wednesday marks the beginning of the season 

of Lent, which is dedicated to reflection, prayer 

and fasting in preparation for Easter. 

LENTEN PROGRAM: NAVIGATING 

EMOTIONAL WELLNESS 

Everyone is invited to the Lenten program: 

Navigating Emotional Wellness, which will 

meet on Wednesday evenings beginning 

February 21 st , from 6:30-7:30 at St. Cuthbert 

Church. We all experience the full range of 

emotions - happiness, frustration, fear, anger, 

joy, sadness, awe, peace - emotions that are 

given to us by God. As our city recovers from 

the trauma of Harvey, many of us have felt 

these emotions in new ways. Scripture is filled 

with emotion, both God’s emotions as well as 

those of His people. Our emotions influence 

our lives as they inform, motivate and guide 

us in what we do or don’t do, say or don’t say 

and react or not. Being intentionally aware 

of our emotions and navigating our reaction 

to them will benefit every aspect of our lives. 

Come be a part of this Lenten study as we 

prepare ourselves to meet the risen Christ. 

Younger children will explore the movie Inside 

Out. This movie centers around an 11-year old 

girl and her emotions as her family makes a 

cross-country move. The nursery will be open

Do you want your children to become lifelong 

servants of the Church? Singing in a children’s 

choir is a great way to help that. The St. 

Elizabeth Ann Seton Schola Cantorum is 

currently accepting children Grades 4-12 for 

its after-school choir program. The choir is 

responsible for enriching the Mass on 10:30 

on Sundays and rehearses every Wednesday 

from 3:45-5 PM. Unique in the area, the choir 

focuses on singing music from the rich Catholic

English Gateway is a program designed to teach conversational English. 

The vision and desire of English Gateway is to assist international

Tuesday Morning Bible Study will start a thirteen session study 

“Meeting Jesus.” Using Leighton Ford’s study guide “Meeting Jesus,” 

we will be taking a fresh look at the Son of God. Using the Gospels of 

Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, we will be examining our relationship 

with Jesus and gain a better understanding of His relevance for us in 

today’s world. There is no cost for the study. Each week you will receive 

a printed scripture reference sheet and the following week’s discussion 

questions. A schedule of meeting times will also be provided. We meet

Baylor University. Originally raised in El Paso, Texas 

then family moved to Houston at 18 YO. 

Dad: Cobby, attorney for a surgical 

center. Went to undergrad at Lincoln 

University. Originally from Ghana, 

most of his family still lives there. 

Daughter: 

Nina, 3 YO. 

Loves ballet, PJ masks, and 

playing dress up. 

“We also have a greyhound who is a retired racer, Artie. We got him from a rescue organization. He sleeps most of the time but enjoys walking 

in the neighborhood and occasionally runs circles in our backyard. He also is terrified of rain and fireworks so depending on the time of year, 

we have to give him special love and attention.” 

What They Love to Do 

Cobby enjoys biking in the area and exploring 

new places with his bike. Chelsey likes going 

on walks with their dog and riding her bike, but 

admits that she is not quite as adventurous with 

bike trails as Cobby. 

Nina loves utilizing different playgrounds and 

activities at the YMCA and the bounce park. They 

spend a lot of time at the pool during the summer, 

whether it is at the YMCA or their community pool. 

Mom and dad enjoy going on food adventures and 

exploring new family owned restaurants. In the 

past, they were more involved with the Westcreek 

community garden, but haven’t been able to be 

as involved this season. They hope to be able 

to get more involved in the spring. As a family, 

they liked learning about gardening from other 

members of the community, especially since they 

are new to gardening. Nina really enjoyed pulling 

the vegetables though apparently, she wasn’t 

always the biggest fan of eating them. Surely 

many other parents can relate! 

Why They Love Living Here 

“We have lived here since the summer of 2015. We like living in the area due to the mature trees, walking and bike paths, 

accessible parks, and overall proximity to family friendly activities. We also enjoy the people in this community and love 

the diversity of the area. 

In the previous cities that we lived in, it was not as easy to get involved in the 

community, but that is not the case here. Over the past year, we organized 

our block’s National Night Out event which was the first time our block 

had this event in years. We also helped with Westcreek’s Easter Egg hunt, 

which our community had not had in years. We enjoyed the ability to build

How They Express It: “We don’t really do anything for Valentine’s Day. We 

exchange gifts and cards but it’s not a big holiday for us.” 

Ideal VD: Dad’s ideal Valentine’s Day would be going to a new restaurant 

that no one has heard about yet. Mom’s ideal Valentine’s Day would be going 

to the restaurant where Dad proposed, but unfortunately that restaurant is 

no longer in business. Other than that, Mom would enjoy spending time at 

home with a nice store bought meal while watching a movie. 

What Makes It Tick: “At Nina’s daycare, they have a Valentine’s Day party and 

exchange Valentine’s Day cards. We usually spend the night before Valentine’s 

Day getting her school cards ready.” Nina usually receives a timeless stuffed 

animal from Mom and Dad (who doesn’t love a new squishy friend?) and 

enjoys candy she received from her Valentine’s card exchange at her school.

NEWS 

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA - COPPERHEAD DISTRICT 

Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important 

as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal 

responsibility and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions 

have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices 

can be made. Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 

5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor 

and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced 

by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which 

includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys 

from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 

to 21). Our Units typically meet weekly. 

Many of our units are supported by the local Elementary Schools 

including: Birkes, Copeland, Duryea, Fiest, Hemmingway, Holmsley,

BOY SCOUT TROOP 61 

Young men between the ages of 11-18 are encouraged to visit Boy 

Scout Troop 61 at 7:00 PM Wednesday nights at Peace Community 

Church, 5151 Addicks Satsuma Road, Houston, Texas, 77084. They 

will get a hands-on experience of what Scouting has to offer and have 

the opportunity to visit with the Scouts and their adult leaders to 

learn more about the things the troop has done during meetings and 

activities. Scouting activities include camping, fishing, archery, rifle/ 

shotgun shooting, hiking, first aid, wilderness survival, community 

service, citizenship, swimming, leadership, white-water rafting and 

much more. Troop 61 camps each month and has a group that goes 

to High Adventure Camp and to Merit Badge Camps each summer. Boy

MEET OUR STUDENTS 

Hosting an international exchange student is a great way of opening 

the world to your children and teaching them about new cultures. 

STS Foundation is currently looking for families for the 2018/2019 

school year. What does it take to be a host family? STS accepts all 

types of families, be it single parents, young marrieds, empty nesters 

or same sex couples - we are looking for families that are willing to 

Share their America with a high school student for the year. All you 

need to provide is three meals a day and a room for them to sleep 

in. The student can share a room with a same sex sibling that is 

within five years of their age. Each student comes with their own 

spending money and health insurance. Most of all, they come with 

an excitement to learn all they can about our American way of life. 

Here are just some of the many students that are available for 

placement: 

Abby from Denmark - loves being active in sports, nature and at the 

beach. She is a competitive swimmer and enjoys horseback riding. 

Dominik from Switzerland - an open minded, uncomplicated boy, 

with a real interest in American sports. 

Maria from Norway - she describes herself as an outgoing, adventurous, 

mature, compassionate person. 

Saana from Finland - she is both sympathetic and empathetic. She enjoys 

music and sports and according to her bio - she has a great laugh!

Local Coordinators, I’ve worked with foreign exchange students for 

seven years and have also hosted 13 students on my own. I can tell you

WILDERNESS TRAILS IN ADDICKS RESERVOIR 

If you are looking for a quick escape from the noise and concrete of west 

Houston, consider the wilderness trails in Addicks Reservoir. Bear Creek 

Pioneer Park re-opened last November and the area is now accessible. 

You can find maps and detailed information about the trails on 

www.hikingproject.com; search for “Addicks Reservoir.” 

Most of the trails are natural surface and are not actively maintained. 

On these wilderness trails you can encounter deer, raccoon, song 

birds and hawks as well as snakes, coyote, mosquitoes, fire ants 

and skunks. Some of the trails are muddy or boggy after rain. Be 

prepared and alert and please bring your trash out. 

(Note that the Corps of Engineers may close areas to access for wildlife 

control operations. Look for signs at the entrances to Noack Trail 

and Miles Trail and please do not enter the area if marked as closed.)

BASEBALL, T-BALL, COACH, MACHINE & KID PITCH 

We would like to invite children from 4 yrs. (as of Sept. 1, 2017) to 

13 years old to join us as we enjoy another season of T-Ball, Coach, 

Machine and Kid Pitch. We look forward to teaching your children the 

skills and watching them enhance their abilities. Registration forms 

are now available in our office or you can register online. We will offer 

several evaluations (skills assessment) days so we can check on their 

skill level so we can even out the teams. The first evaluation will be 

Monday, Tuesday and Thursday Nights, February 20 th , 21 st and 

23 rd , between 6-7 PM. The last evaluation will be Saturday, February 

25 th between 9-10:30 AM. It only takes a few minutes for us to run 

them through the drills and then we will contact each player the 

week before they begin practices. After Monday, February 27 th , we 

cannot guarantee a place on a team. They will practice for one hour 

a week on a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday. Practices begin 

the week of March 20 th and the league runs through May 20 th . The 

early cost will be $80 for those registering before February 21 st . After 

February 22 nd the cost will be $90. If you have questions or would like

FORWARD BASKETBALL HIGH SCHOOL GUYS 

Be a part of one of our basketball leagues. Practice/Games will be on 

Monday, Tuesday or Thursday nights. Evaluations to help set the 

teams will be February 27 th , 28 th , March 2 nd , 6 th , 7 th and 9 th from 6:30 

PM to 8:30 PM in our Gym. You can register online. Look for Forward 

Basketball and click on it. We will have registration forms available 

in the church office and in the Student Ministry area. Practices begin 

the week of March 20 th and the league runs through May 1 st . The

Games will be on Saturdays. The league will have a tournament 

at the conclusion of the season. Evaluations for all players will be 

Saturday, March 17 th from 10-11 AM and Tuesday and Thursday, 

March 20 th and 22 nd from 6:30-7:30 PM. These will take place on the 

fields behind the church. Cost for the league will be $40 per player 

covering cost of officials and jersey. Games will begin April 7 th and 

conclude on May 12 th . You can register online under Men’s Sports. 

ADULT SOCCER 

Join us for a new adult soccer league! This leagues is open to men 

and women, age 18 and up. There will be a skills evaluation on 

Saturday, March 10 th from 10-11 AM to assist in making equal teams. 

This assessment and all games will be held on the fields behind the 

church. Games will begin on April 7 th and conclude on May 12 th . Cost 

for the league will be $40 per player. This will include a jersey. 

YOUTH SUMMER SPORTS CAMPS 

This summer, kiddos age 7 to 14 can participate in half day summer 

sports camps! A football lover? Volleyball champion? Baseball slugger? 

We’ve got a camp for you! And more! Each week will be a different sport

NORTHWEST FLYERS YOUTH 

TRACK CLUB REGISTRATION 

The Northwest Flyers Youth Track Club will celebrate its 31 st Anniversary 

Season by hosting its annual free Registration/Orientation breakfast on 

Saturday, February 3, 2018, for all boys and girls who are interested in 

joining for the 2018 track season. The breakfast starts promptly at 8:30 AM 

at the Cypress Creek Christian Community Center Forum located at 6823 

Cypresswood Dr., Spring, TX, 77379. 

The event is an opportunity for youth athletes to register for the 2018 

spring/summer track season and to meet the Northwest Flyers coaches, 

staff and other new and returning athletes. The event will be highlighted 

by a special presentation from a member of the USA Track &Field Olympic 

organization (USATF). All athletes and parents who wish to join the 

Northwest Flyers must attend the orientation. 

The Northwest Flyers Track Club is a youth (ages 6 -18) track club, affiliated 

with USA Track & Field (USATF), that provides a full program of sanctioned 

“track” events such as sprints, hurdles, middle distance, distance and 

relays and sanctioned “field” events such as long jump, triple jump, high 

jump, pole vault, shot put, discus and javelin.

In its third season, FC Cypress Soccer Club is now accepting 

registration for ages 7-13. FC Cypress Soccer Club was founded by 

Cypress resident and former professional player Marc Castillo, who 

grew up playing competitive soccer in Bear Creek and Houston. 

During the Spring Season, practices will be held at Ollin Sports 

Therapy, 16636 House Hahl Rd in Cypress and games will be played at 

Salem Lutheran Church, 22601 Lutheran Church Rd in Tomball. Players 

can enter one of three different programs, depending on their age and

Registration for Fun, Fair, Positive Soccer (FFPS) is open for boys and girls 

ages 4 to 18 for the SPRING Season. Games start on April 7, 2018. FFPS 

is a non-profit youth soccer program dedicated to providing a positive 

youth sports experience for all children. Founded in 1986 in Katy, Texas, 

FFPS has grown to 22 leagues and 16,000 players throughout the Greater 

Houston area. FFPS offers children a fun and fair experience, including 

one practice per week, a full uniform and trophy for every player, equal 

playing time and play every position, co-ed/balanced teams, positive 

coaching and more. No tryouts are required.

INSPIRING HANDS MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE 

IN THE LIVES OF THOSE WITH FINANCIAL AND SPECIAL NEEDS 

Each year Inspiring Hands provides scholarships to those with financial 

and special needs to attend summer camp and equine therapy at centers 

in Texas that meet the recipient’s special abilities. They have provided 

nearly $60,000 in scholarships to 76 recipients since May of 2015. Their 

2018 partners are Camp Blessing, Camp CAMP, Camp Summit, SIRE, Joy- 

Ride & Panther Creek Inspirational Ranch. If non-profit camps or centers 

in Texas wish to become partners for the 2018 season, please visit their

Funding for Inspiring Hands Scholarships comes from general donations 

and their annual Come Together event. This year they held their 3 rd annual 

event for IH Scholarships on Friday, October 27 th at Sterling Country Club 

in Houston, TX. It was a huge success and they raised $65,000. Without 

the support of the community, event attendees, donors and sponsors this 

would not have been possible. A special thank you to the event platinum

Applying for a Scholarship 

Applications are accepted November 1 st through March 15 th of each 

year. Recipients are considered by the Selection Committee on a caseby-case 

basis. Although camps and centers may be throughout Texas, 

applicants must reside in Harris, Montgomery, Liberty, Chambers, 

Galveston, Brazoria, Fort Bend or Waller County, Texas. Final recipients 

are chosen by the Selection Committee and awarded by May 1 st of each

Go On A Surprise Trip. What better way to spend time together than by going on a 

surprise trip? Instead of just telling your partner that you planned a getaway, make 

them work to figure out what their Valentine’s present is. Write the name of the destination 

on a piece of paper and cut it up into pieces that they have to put together. 

If you want to really build up the anticipation, you can always give them one piece 

of the puzzle a day leading up to Valentine’s Day. 

Kidnap Them For A Day. If your partner is into fun gags, put a blindfold on him or 

her and drive them to your chosen destination before you take the blindfold off. It 

can be something as simple as a romantic dinner to their favorite restaurant or a 

visit to their favorite museum. Tell them little clues along the way to see if they can 

actually guess where they are going. 

Act Like A Tourist. Just because you have lived in a city for a while it doesn’t mean 

that you’ve visited everywhere there is to go. For Valentine’s Day, do a little bit of 

research about restaurants or attractions that you and your partner have never been 

to before. Then on Valentine’s Day, act like tourists at the place you end up going 

too. Don’t just rush through the experience. Really soak it all in, spend a lot of time 

there and just have a good time overall. 

Can’t Get Away For A Few Days? Book A Hotel Room. If you and your partner want 

to go on a vacation, but don’t have the time, consider booking a really nice hotel 

room for 1-2 nights. Even though you won’t actually be leaving your city, it might 

feel like it if you choose the right hotel. Not only should the hotel you choose have 

plenty of activities and amenities, but it should be in a location that will allow you 

to easily enjoy restaurants and shops within walking distance. 

Share The Romance. If you and your partner are the kind of couple that likes to outdo 

one another, consider trading off. On even days you could plan romantic activities 

and on odd days it’s your partner’s turn. This can last for only a few days, a week or 

the entire month of February! If you really want to wow them consider going on a 

day cruise on your day or going camping for the night.

What was supposed to be a family vacation to Las Vegas/the Grand Canyon 

the week before Thanksgiving, ended up turning into the most picture 

perfect proposal. The morning we were supposed to leave for the Grand 

Canyon, I wasn’t feeling well, and said I would stay back. However, William 

was very insistent that I come. I took some medicine, got ready really 

quickly, and we hopped into the car for our grand excursion. When we got 

to the Grand Canyon, it was freezing outside (to Texans of course!) and 

there was even some snow on the ground. It looked so magical (especially 

considering I have only seen snow a couple of times)! As I was getting out 

of the car, I noticed that one of my fake nails had fallen off (I had gotten my 

nails done the week prior) ON MY LEFT HAND! William’s mother had 

asked, “what hand did the nail fall off from?”, which I thought was a funny 

question to ask. When we got to the Grand Canyon, we stopped to take 

pictures (and get me a jacket because I did NOT plan for freezing weather). 

During one picture, William had bent down to sit for the picture, but in 

my head I was thinking “THIS IS IT! THERE IS WHERE WE GET EN- 

GAGED!” My heart started racing and I was so excited. But....all that was said was, “Chelsea, sit down so we can take the picture.” I was slightly disappointed, 

but I wouldn’t let it ruin my time. We went to go grab a bite to eat, and William and his family were asking when sunset was so we could go to one final stop: 

Yavapai Point. By the time we got there, I was freezing and felt like my hands and legs were going numb and was apprehensive to take more pictures. Then, in 

the most perfect spot, right as we were posing for a picture, William got down on one knee and showed me the most beautiful ring that he picked out himself. 

I didn’t even let him talk I was so in shock that I just went in for a giant hug. When his family asked what I said, I responded with, “oh he never asked!” He 

officially asked, I said “YES!!!!!!!”, and the rest of our “grand” love story is history!

My wife and I met on a blind date – we were immediately attracted 

to each other. Later, when the time came, I wanted to have the 

perfect way to propose to her, so I conspired with my mother to 

create the ‘perfect day’. First, my sister, Rachel, took a picture 

of me at our favorite place – Castlewood State Park outside of St. 

Louis, Missouri. From this picture, a wooden jigsaw puzzle was 

created – the largest piece in the center being a sign with my special 

message… ‘Lisa, Will You Marry Me?’. The remaining pieces 

of the puzzle were randomly divided into handmade velvet bags 

that each had a handwritten calligraphy poem on them created 

by me describing a new location for the ‘Treasure Hunt’. Each location 

has some significance since it was a place where we had 

experienced something special together. At the last location, I 

presented her with the final piece and the diamond ring. My wife 

is a very special person who has given me so much…I love her.

"They" say that after a storm, comes a rainbow....it turns out that "they" 

are correct. I met my fiancé, TJ, about 20 years ago. Nothing became 

of it, except seeing the familiar face from time to time throughout the 

years. On July 15, I ran into the familiar face, yet once again. Except this 

time, it was God's timing and we were engaged on September 16. He is 

the biggest teddy bear with the kindest soul. He is the happily ever after 

that me & daughters needed for so long.... We will say "I do" on 2/11/18. 35
