As Hororata Community Trust executive officer, I’m continually overwhelmed by the generosity and support that I see in our community. It is through the dedication and hard work of so many volunteers who are passionate about seeing our communities continue to grow and flourish, that the trust can achieve so much. Last year was a big one for the trust. Events started with a free Scottish concert in the Hororata Hall and then the Heritage Open Day. We attended the South Island Agricultural Field Days and The Star Home and Leisure STAMINA: The Hororata Highland Games will return in November complete with the popular Tug O’ War competition. PHOTO: MURRAY IRWIN Show to promote all that our district has to offer. The ceilidh event saw the Hororata Hall once again in full swing to an array of Scottish tunes. Among all of this, Go Hororata was formed. The trust is excited to be part of this driven and motivated group. In August, the trust funded a feasibility study on the concept of a new community centre. This saw Go Hororata present a proposal to the district council for a new community centre on the Hororata Domain. Then of course in November, the Hororata Highland Games was again a huge success with 11,000 enjoying this amazing event. And 2018 is looking just as exciting. On March 11, the trust will host the ‘heritage of a rural water scheme’ bus tour. On this tour, people will learn about the transition from open water races to the efficiency of piped water. Tickets are available now for this event. Then on April 28, the Hororata Night Glow will take place in the wonderful Hororata Domain. This will be a spectacular event with hot air balloons firing up the night sky and ‘glowing’ in unison to music. Surrounding the Night Glow will be an autumn festival which promotes local businesses and community groups. The trust will continue to work as part of the Go Hororata group on the new community centre and other projects. To find out more, make sure you visit www.hororata. org.nz and follow the trust on Facebook. I am looking forward to seeing what we can all achieve together in 2018. A reader responds to an article about the potential chlorination of water supplies across the district Rebecca Henderson – This topic makes me so angry. I could go on and on how chlorine is so dangerous for our health. I have lived in Springfield for 12 years where the water is heavily chlorinated. I fought black and blue with the district council to sort out a filtration system for the water when my son was a baby (10 years ago) as he was suffering from severe eczema and putting him in a bath of chlorinated water was like walking on broken glass for him. The neighbours would hear his screams three blocks away. I spend $20 per week on bottled water on a solo parent. Why would you put chemicals in your body when it is not necessary and filtration systems can be put in place? SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Wednesday February 7 2018 7 FINAL WEEK! Sure, go ahead and put chlorine in the water if a filtration system won’t kill the nasties, but then put in a filter system after this to get rid of the chlorine . . . after all, district councillor Pat McEvedy said “the district council must protect people’s health”. A group of former Lincoln High School students have made their dream of producing hangiflavoured chips a reality with help from Heartland Potato Chips Nick King – Just a generic “meaty” taste like 2min beef noodles. Nothing vaguely hangilike or smokey about them. Dallas Churton – Didn’t like them, yuck. Would rather eat chicken chips, and I hate chicken chips. Amanda Holden – Good idea but didn’t like them. Love Heartland’s other flavours, they are the only chips we buy. Amanda White – Got a pack to try, yuck. CRUNCH: Courtney Jones, 19, is one of eight former Lincoln High School students to come up with the idea of hangi-flavoured potato chips, which are now being sold in supermarkets nationwide. PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER Cool idea though. Mark Smith – Tried them. Need a little more intensity. Julie Ngaia – What a clever girl. I’m addicted. Love them. Denise Petrie – We tried them on the weekend and they are yummy, well done. John Kramer – No thanks, I would rather have the real thing. Kieran Frazer – Loved them.
