ANTHONY INGHAM
"MÁS QUE UN HOTEL,
UNA EXPERIENCIA"
"MORE THAN A HOTEL,
AN EXPERIENCE"
L
M
illennials is one of the emerging groups that W
has captivated. We spoke with Anthony Ingham,
Global Brand Leader for W Hotels Worldwide,
who told us about new projects at W, as well as his
stories leading the luxury brand.
Ingham's job is to make sure that guests enjoy an
unforgettable stay at the W Hotels. Due to his work,
Ingham travels often, which has allowed him to know
the culture of each country he visits.
In addition to the needs and new global trends, he
always thinks about new ways to merge in these touches
to enrich the brand.
How would you define the W experience?
The first hotel opened in New York, in 1998. New Yorkers have an
open mind, look for new trends, have a fast-paced lifestyle and
always look forward. The brand brings a lot of the New York City's
DNA. Although everything shapes differently in each country, our
guests look for a different experience. We foster a setting filled
with energy, social gathering places, adapted to the local reality.
For instance, W Santiago feels very Chilean. We take into account
factors such as standards, culture, geography and history, which
fuse into the design of each hotel, preserving our brand's DNA, but
focused on that specific destination.
Media statements indicated the goal of the Marriott-
Starwood merger was to reach out to a younger audience, is
that correct?
W counts with the largest volume of millennials. It's amazing when
you think it's a pretty expensive brand, in a luxury market, and
despite that, we accommodate a higher amount of millennials than
any other company. That means that the W brand is highly valued by
new generations of persons with higher income. If we attract a new
generation that is wiling to spend money on experience and travel,
that will have a lot of impact for the brand in the coming years.
Santiago.
What brand projects and innovations would you highlight?
The W Sound Suites are very successful. They have been available
in Bali, Indonesia, for 18 months now, allowing musicians to have a
recording studio during their stay for those moments of creativity. The
destination made sense, since many musicians connect to through
that area while touring around Asia and Australia. Subsequently, the
W Sound Suites replicated in Barcelona, Hollywood and Seattle,
and we are working on others. The good thing is that we make W
part of the music industry, since it is a preferred place musicians to
stay and perform. For instance, the Chilean singer Camila Gallardo
stayed at W Santiago this month.
experiencia W?
What aspects make the W experience
unique?
Me interesó mucho Tel Aviv, Israel.
Atraemos
gente que no siempre es del
mundo hotelero, personas jóvenes
que se sientan atraídas
por la marca W. En los hoteles
se busca una programación
variada, la idea es que siempre
haya algo nuevo, distinto, por
ejemplo, casas de moda, DJs,
etcétera.
The people and the
programming. We attract
people who are not always
from the hospitality world,
a young audience attracted to
the W brand. For hotels we look
for a varied program/calendar,
the idea is that there is always
something new, different, such
as, fashion shows, DJ spins and
more.
What changes have there been in the hospitality industry
and how does the W brand was affected by them?
There have been many. One of the biggest in the world of luxury
is that people are changing the way they spend money
and demand more to live an experience than to receive things.
Traveling and staying at a luxury hotel is all about the experience
and that is fundamental for W. We do not create hotels,
but destinations for global citizens, we first created a destination
where travelers live a full experience mixing fashion, music,
people, social gathering places, cuisine and so on.
What is your relationship with Chile?
My mother is Chilean. I have family here; In fact, on Sunday
I went to my aunt's house. My brother lives in Ecuador; my
father, in England, and the others, in Australia, I feel at home
here. I've lived in Australia for 10 years, but coming to Chile
feels like home, very familiar. Santiago has changed, it seems
different, but the atmosphere is still very familiar.
You are a citizen of the world, you have lived in different
countries, what are the countries or the anecdotes that
you remember the most?
I think that this year I have traveled around the world four times.
I was very interested in Tel Aviv, Israel. I had not visited this
country and I enjoyed the culture, its youth; It is a very open
place, very similar to W's DNA, focused on fashion and music.
Also its people, who workout a lot and live in a country where
you do not know what could happen tomorrow. That mentality
of living one day at a time touched me, they have an incredible
energy and the most vigorous population.
El diseño. Es distinto
de otras experiencias,
muy vanguardista. Otros hoteles
de lujo se enfocan solamente
en los detalles de la experiencia,
pero son parecidos entre sí.
La ubicación. Tiene
que estar emplazado en
una zona céntrica, cerca de la
vida nocturna, restaurantes, bares,
shopping, y también próximo
a los centros de negocios.
La ubicación tiene que ser la
mejor del lugar, ya sea una ciudad
con playa, al lado de la pista
en una zona de esquí o en el
centro de la zona más divertida
de la ciudad.
Design. It differs from
other experiences, very
cutting-edge. Other luxury hotels
focus only on the details
of the experience, but they are
similar to each other.
The site's location
must be in a central
area, close to nightlife, restaurants,
bars, shopping, and
You are a person committed to human rights and samesex
marriage, why is this topic motivating you and what
initiatives have you taken or promoted?
W is a gay friendly brand from its backbone. Brands are obliged;
For example, in our case, to support key social causes that are
of interest and relevance to our guests and employees. Our internal
policies were perfect when it came to treating all employees
equally. Three years ago we started looking for a more direct
way to support, so we decided to use the power of music for our
campaign. To raise awareness in the population, our message
was televised. In the search for legalizing gay marriage throughout
all U.S. states, the actress and singer Jennifer Hudson joined as
our ambassador. We came together and we completed 40 fundraising
events to support the legal struggle, which continued until
about 18 months before the legalization in 2015. We did something
more political, linked to the way millennial consumers think in
general; It is highly important that brands take a point of view and
battle for it, although it is not always easy and there are people who
may not agree with it.
5 RUTAS NAVIERAS AUSTRALES
5 SOUTHERN SHIPPING ROUTES
Over 1,000 kilometers of extension covers one of the
most remarkable crossings of the national territory.
Island connectivity at the regions of Los Lagos
and Aysen makes this journey a unique experience
of direct contact with the nature and beauty of the
southernmost corners in Chile.
Puerto Montt - Chiloe route:
From Puerto Montt it is possible to visit, not only the city's beautiful
attractions, but also to connect with the Isla Grande de Chiloe,
a must-visit destination while you are in the south of Chile. The
trip between these two cities is a little
over three hours and includes transfer
by ferry.
To begin this spectacular journey, we
recommend some of the most attractive
places to visit in Puerto Montt.
Just to name a few: the Plaza de Armas,
where you will find the magnificent
Cathedral, the Diego Rivera House
of Art, the Monument to the German
Colonization and, of course, the historic
state houses located downtown, and
one of the great attractions for those
who travel to Puerto Montt is the Caleta
Angelmo, on the banks of the Tenglo
River, offering tourists a great choice to
walk around, from a large craft market
with the best of the city and the region,
the market and even typical traditional cuisine, considered a
highlight by most visitors.
To get to Isla Chiloe, you need to take a ferry from Pargua. To get
to Pargua from Puerto Montt, take the Panamericana Sur / Route
5, at the 60th kilometer. Travel time is 50 minutes.
Currently, two companies offer the crossing service to Chiloe. The
Transmarchilay, which uses 4 ferries with notable lengths as well
as the Cruz del Sur shipping company.
The regular crossing service runs from 7:00 am to 11:30 pm.
Departures are around every 15 to 20 minutes, and the total
crossing time takes about half and hour. After 11:30 pm , there is
a shuttle service available every hour.
The Chacao channel, defined by many biologists as the gateway to
the world's past, because once you are on the island you will reach
the Chiloe National Park, one of the few forest areas preserving
primitive flora and fauna species.
Puerto Montt - Ayacara - Chaiten Route
As its name represents, it connects Puerto Montt and Chaiten, with
a stopover in the town of Ayacara. From Puerto Montt to Chaitén
there are 239 kilometers. Chaiten is remembered by the the volcano
eruption in 2008.
attractions such as hot springs,
water sports and trekking. 151
kilometers on route to Chaiten,
you will find Futaleufu, a host
city for activities such as rafting,
kayaking and fly fishing. One
of its most iconic lakes is the
Espolon. From Futaleufu you
may get to Argentina, through
the Trevilin international pass.
Naviera Austral is one of the
shipping companies handling
this tour. There is a departure
schedule set as of January
2018 from Puerto Montt to
Chaiten on Monday, Thursday
and Friday. With good visibility
you may notice a ridge of high
peaks and volcanoes on the
continent.
There are about 3 weekly trips
in each direction, usually sailing
at night to arrive the next day
early in the morning, which
restrains you from enjoying the
landscape.
Travel time is 9 hours.
Designated seating provided
Región de Los Lagos
Malalcahuello
from nearby locations. The urban centers that are close to its
slopes are the town of Ensenada, and the cities of Puerto Varas
20 medallas obtuvo Chile
consigna.
THE CRAFT BEER
MARKET IN CHILE
In the past few years, beer has increased its popularity
steadily. One of the reasons is the low alcoholic
content, but also due to the booming production
nationwide, defined by the variety per producer.
Although the Chilean consumer is
increasingly preferring beer over other
alcoholic beverages, numbers are
far from reaching the top-ranked countries
such as Venezuela, Brazil and Mexico.
According to estimates of the Association
of Beer Producers of Chile (ACECHI), the
per capita consumption in Chile reached 46
liters in 2016.
One of the main reasons why beer is
preferred is the low graduation, which makes
it a moderated drink compatible with other
recreational activities. But, undoubtedly, one
of the dominating factors of the increasing
consumption levels is the great variety
offered by beer producers today.
"Part of the producers' efforts also focus on
educating consumers about what we find
in the market and product offerings, work
that has been done successfully increasing
consumer interest, says Victor Rodrigo
Jara, winemaker with experience in beer
production, collaborator at the Agronomists
and Winemakers Associations of Chile,
author of the book "Eno21", oenological
practices in the 21st Century".
Ximena Bravo, General Manager of ACECHI,
points out that, along with the sustained
increase of the number of producers
nationwide, in the past few years, the growth
of beer imports has also grown steadily. In
2016, over 190 million liters of beer were
imported to Chile, which meant an increase
of 18% compared to the previous year and
recorded the highest figure since 2012.
But, undoubtedly, the increase in
consumption is due to an expansion
production-wise and the launch of new
varieties, responding to a highly educated
consumer; and as the market is more
open to welcome new products, imports
have increased as a result of a more
knowledgable consumer, who values a more
diverse supply.
"The rise in the demand for beer in recent
years is sustained by the increasing levels
of imports, as well as the local production
and distribution, mostly craft beers from
small makers. They have successfully
generated demand for their products,
attracting consumer interest for more indepth
learning, engaging and stimulating
entrepreneurship for that matter" adds
Victor Rodrigo Jara.
According to the ACECHI, today the national
producers - which are around 300- create
up to six different varieties of beer, from
the traditional lager, dark, wheat, red, fruit,
among others. With that said, beer is no
longer a product reserved only for summer
and high temperatures, making it one of the
most versatile drinks for pairings with all
kinds of dishes and occasions.
"In this sense, it is relevant to highlight
the inclusion of women both in the field of
production and consumption, leaving out
the old stereotypes that link beer with men
watching football. Today, beer has become a
20 medals for Chile at the
2017 Beer America Cup
In the latest edition for this event, which
brings together every year the best
commercial and craft brands from
different countries, Chile was one of the
most awarded with 20 medals. Brazil took
the first place (71), followed by the United
States (41) and Argentina (29).
These are 5 of the awarded beers:
• Pale malty european lager:
beverage many times considered gourmet and that in certain cases
may compete with wine when it comes to making food pairings"
states Jara, who is also a professor at the School of Agronomy of
the University of the Americas.
Therefore, innovation plays a key role in the positive respond from
the local beer industry to expand consumption and breaking the
traditional seasonality.
A clear example of this has been the growth of non-alcoholic beers,
which have been in the market for less than a decade growing
consistently, responding to a strong consumer demand.
Reflection of the above is the expansion of the artisanal sector,
which now represents just over 1% of total beer sales in Chile, but
keep up growth rates of between 15 and 20% per year. This has
allowed to boost the Premium class and diversify with an extensive
product offer available for consumers.
Hence, it is possible to project a steady rise in consumption,
since the industry seems capable of responding to the current
demand, along with promoting a responsible intake, which
includes encouraging moderation specially throughout vulnerable
segments (children, pregnant women and drivers). The industry's
sustainability binds together by incrementing per capita
consumption, but always the smart, educated way.
in Santiago, where, although it may not seem
like it, green natural sanctuaries are just a few
pedals away.
lanchas.
THE "MINGAS" IN
CHILOE: A TRADITION
THAT MOVES MUCH
MORE THAN HOUSES
That a whole community moves to help their peers
without receiving money in return is one of the most
deeply rooted festivities in southern Chile. A true social
phenomenon, which shows the value of the community:
"Today for me, tomorrow for you".
Magic, tradition and beliefs. Three words that define
perfectly what represents the Big Island of Chiloe, along
with other islands and islets that make up the archipelago
of the same name.
Located over 1,200 kilometers from Santiago, an area characterized
by the warmth of its people, its nature, crafts, cuisine, colorful
palafitos (peculiar houses on the sea) and its ancient churches, built
between the 18th and 19th centuries.
But this town of the Los Lagos Region also stands out for its
solidarity and teamwork, all their virtues come through the "Minga",
a system of moving houses from one place of the archipelago to
another, towed by oxen, trailers or boats.
Thus, it is quite common that, in a traditional and magical trip around
the island, tourists experience a surprising show: a house that
literally moves through the water or crosses hills. These exceptional
community activities are known as are "mingas".
42 43
the mingas are more than moving houses, they also relate to all
kinds of land preparation: sowing, harvesting, cutting, logging and
the classic house towing. plowing.
With the current means and advances, it is not that absurd to think
that some people are surprised by the mingas, at least in terms
of the simplicity that other techniques would bring. However, the
islanders prefer to keep this tradition alive, which not only serves as
a collaborative effort among neighbors in domestic work, but also
keeps the community together.
For this reason, the mingas are not only one of the many tourist
attractions offered by the Isla Grande de Chiloe and have become a
true social phenomenon.
The real importance of mingas lies in the value that people offer
to others, because when called, most of them answer and come.
Celebration of life, love and solidarity prevails over the physical
efforts, long working hours and organization. That's what the
Chilotes call "the power of the community".
Leadership, fellowship, teamwork and learning how to share are
feelings that participants relate directly to the act of the minga,
because in this festivity you learn that together you get things that
could never be achieved by doing it alone.
To carry out the process, commuters take the houses' wooden
structure and assisted by oxen or boats they move it to its news
destination.
Dragging the construction requires large quantities of wood, to shape
up a base like a sort of sled. Inside, furniture, doors and windows
removal, as well as reinforcing with beams at strategic points so that
the movement does not cause any deformation, or even collapse.
The oxen generally drag the house on land, while boats come
to action when crossing through water canals, rivers or sea.
Restaurants and churches can be moved through "mingas" as well.
To key to success for mingas is team-work and collaboration. When
neighbors receive the call, they know about the event's importance
and make sure that they do everything carefully to avoid damages
to the wooden structure, so thee house reaches it destination in
perfect conditions.
COLLECTIVE POWER
The word "minga" originates from the pre-Columbian communities,
who defined in Quechua "mink'a" as task done to help a community,
under the premise "request help promising something."
In other words, this type of reciprocal work comes from the
philosophy "today for me, tomorrow for you", and it is quite common
in South American countries such as Colombia, Peru, Ecuador,
Bolivia, Paraguay and -of course- Chile, especially for requesting
assistance in rural and agricultural matters.
In Chiloe, despite being one of the largest islands of Chile, its
population is scarce and the land divides into small properties,
mainly managed by families who do not have the financial resources
to hire help. The mingas are asking a favor to your neighbors in
return of working for the land.
Even though they are the most popular among locals and tourists,
44 45
APPRECIATION FEAST
At the end of an exhausting day, the host family (not necessarily with
the leadership role) offers its collaborators a closing celebration, a
feast with abundant food, drinks, music and folkloric dances from
the area.
All the community joins to this joyful party, even tourists are often
invited and stay taking part of the minga as well.
This is the way house owners thank their neighbors for their time,
dedication and helpfulness.
But, in addition to the banquet and the party, the host family must
"give back" and go to a minga when someone else needs it. Because,
paradoxically to modern times, one of the most sacred rules of the
mingas in Chiloe is that during the process there is no exchange of
money since islanders say: "If there is payment, it is not minga".
