12 HELEN JANE LONG RELEASES PERSPECTIVE Top 10 Billboard and award winning artist Helen Jane Long has established herself as one of the most popular female pianist and composers of all time. She has written extensively for film and television writing memorable music for some of the world’s most lucrative brands. This is not surprising given that Helen has worked closely with prestigious composers including the late Jerry Goldsmith, Ron Goodwin and Howard Shore, when he was composing and recording his Academy Award winning soundtrack for the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Without knowing, most people will have heard her music hundreds of times and in unexpected places. ‘Earlier in the year, I was walking through Philadelphia airport and I could hear familiar music playing from a shop. As I stepped closer, I realised it was a piece from one of my albums. The shop assistant asked if she could help me and I smiled and said I recognised the music. She then asked if I would like to buy a copy of the album. I thanked her and said, that’s ok, I think I’ve already got a copy! It was a funny moment.’ Born and raised in South-East England, Helen was playing piano by ear aged four. Her ability to recreate the sound she heard quickly became one of the cornerstones of her composing career, as she taught herself to play many instruments in quick succession. In 2006, Helen was discovered and signed a record deal with Warner music, who released her first album Porcelain. It went on to critical acclaim on major radio stations worldwide and countless requests for live shows were the catalyst for bringing Helen out of hiding and kick starting her international touring career. ‘Now I wonder why I avoided it for so long, it’s the one thing that connects me to my audience and I love it!’ Between 2007 and 2016, Helen released another 4 piano albums and continued writing for film and touring the USA. In 2017, Helen created and produced her first music video ‘When Angels Rise’ which recently won 5 international awards including ‘Best Inspirational Music Video’ in the New York Film Awards and Global Film Awards. In 2018, with a worldwide following of millions, Helen is set to embark on her fifth USA tour. All of her piano albums have climbed the charts in rapid succession, including her latest single ‘Outside’ with its catchy melody. Helen’s new album, ‘Perspective’ due for release on 11 February, is an exciting new direction in her compositions, yet stays true to her original and muchloved style. Visitors can be the first to hear the new album and pre-order the digital copy now from Itunes, Amazon and many other online stores. George Barton. ST JOHN’S SMITH SQUARE PRINCIPAL SOUND FESTIVAL Following a critically acclaimed celebration of the music of Morton Feldman in 2016, the Principal Sound Festival returns to St John’s Smith Square in February for three days of concerts that juxtapose the late works of Feldman and Luigi Nono. Bringing together some of contemporary music's most respected ensembles, including EXAUDI and the Bozzini Quartet, with the UK's most exciting young talent – including Explore Ensemble and St John's Young Artists George Barton and Siwan Rhys – the festival offers the opportunity to be immersed in the contemplative works of these two giants of post-war music, both of whom opened up new worlds of sonic exploration, focusing in on the minutiae of individual voices, textures and sounds.
