Side Trips
Truth be told, I hadn’t watched any NFL
football this fall or winter.
I’ve never been a huge fan of professional
football, but this year I suppose my
feelings about players
disrespecting the national
anthem further
decreased my desire to
tune in for the games.
During the playoffs
I didn’t want to jinx
the Vikings, so I didn’t
watch then either.
But the Super Bowl
is different. I’ve pretty
much always watched
the big game, sometimes
enjoying the
commercials and the

halftime show more than the football game
itself.
My husband admires the Patriots organization
and the dynasty they’ve built, so he joked
with me on Sunday about betting on the game.
I didn’t bite, as I wasn’t about to bet against
a team led by Tom Brady, with experience at
coming from behind and veterans of the hype
that surrounds the big game.
He kept taunting me, even saying, “what if
your team gets up by 10, then what?” I tried to
tell him that I didn’t have “a team” in the game,
but he was having fun with it, so I played
along.
Once we settled in to watch the game, I kept
my opinions to myself about Bill Belichick
on the sidelines in his cut-off sweatshirt. As
the clock ticked by and the game became an
offensive battle, my husband grew increasingly
quiet. When the score showed a 10-point
spread he looked concerned, and I began to
think I should have made a bet after all.
The game was good, the halftime show was
good and there were a few clever commercials.
Not bad entertainment for a wintery Sunday
evening.

Cherokee Symphony Mid-Winter Concert set for Feb. 18
A
concert with a bit of unfinished
business.
The Cherokee Symphony
Mid-Winter Concert will be performed
at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb.
18, and will feature great works by a
number of artists including one that
is incomplete.
“Symphony No. 8 in B minor Unfinished”
by Franz Schubert was discovered
37 years after his death. It will
be in the lineup for the Mid-Winter
Concert.
“As a cellist I have played this piece
a couple times. I never had the chance
to conduct it. It is a composition of
mystery. It begins with a foreboding
theme in the cello and bass for eight
measures and then the upper strings
come in with a quick series of notes
laying down a blanket of sound for
the the woodwinds to take over the
theme. The symphony is in a minor
key which adds to the mysterious
sound,” said Ted Hallberg, the Cherokee
Symphony’s conductor.
Hallberg said that in addition to
the mysterious tone of the piece, the
reason it is unfinished it also a bit of a
mystery as well.
“The reason it is called the Unfinished
Symphony is that it has only
two movements. Almost all symphonies
have four movements. We are not
sure why he stopped composing this
piece. Many times the compositions
go unfinished because the composer
was ill or passed away. Not Schubert,”
Hallberg said. “He went on to write
two more symphonies and many
vocal works after this symphony. So
there it sits with only two and is considered
one of his greatest instrumental
works.”
In addition to Schubert, the audience
can expect to hear other works,
which were chosen with the intent
purpose of pleasing the audience.
“I was trying to choose music that
would please the audience. Some of
the selections are what we call ‘warhorses,’
which means they have been
popular for a long time,” Hallberg
said.
Some of the pieces are ones that
the audience has probably heard, but
might not know by name. The symphony
will be playing the “Hungarian
Dances No. 5 and 6” by Johannes
Brahms, and the “Waltz from Eugene
Onegin” by Peter Tchaikovsky.
“These are played on TV commercials
and even Tom and Jerry cartoons.
I also selected some contemporary
works which I am sure the audience
will like,” Hallberg said. “One is a selection
by Claude T. Smith, originally
written for concert band, called ‘God
of Our Fathers.’ It is a set of variations
based on the hymn of the same
name.”
The Cherokee Symphony is in its
62nd season and is composed of
musicians from twenty communities.
This concert is a great way to see them
in action and enjoy some fine music.
“I look forward to presenting a
concert where the audience will enjoy
what they hear. And hopefully tell
their friends of the symphony concert,”
Hallberg said. “And then they
will want to come hear our outstanding
ensemble.” F

Wednesday, Feb. 14
Valentine’s Day is all about
spending time with the one
you love.
The Iowa Rock ‘n’ Roll Music Association
is inviting you to spend this
Valentine’s Day rocking out.
They’ll be hosting the first-ever
Cupid’s Ball at The Okoboji Barn,
formerly known as Rolling Oaks
Barn, on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14.
The event will kick off at 7 p.m.
and wrap up at 9 p.m.
The event is only $5 and will feature
the band Lake Patrol.
“The band Lake Patrol is a rhythm
and blues band that is very popular
in northwest Iowa. Many of the
members are inducted in the Iowa
Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame,” said
Cindy Stanbro, the executive director
of the Iowa Rock ‘n’ Roll Music
Association.
The members of the band include
Joe Cuttell (guitar/vocals), Brian
Moore (saxophone), Dave Chapman
and Jerry Jones (bass/vocals),
Tim Horsman (keyboards/vocals)
and Mick Buckley (drums/vocals).
The idea for the brand new event
came about because the IRRMA
wanted to do a themed dance for
adults around the holiday.
“We wanted to offer a fun event in
the middle of the winter for our locals
who stay in Okoboji year-round
to enjoy and help melt those winter
blues,” Stanbro said.
The Okoboji Barn was chosen as a
location for the event based on the
fact that it’s known for its live music
and offers plenty of space for dancing
and dining.
In addition to enjoying an evening
of music and dancing another part
of the event that Stanbro is especially
looking forward to is to the
King and Queen contest.
A King and Queen will be crowned
that night.
“I’m looking forward to seeing
folks dress up for the King and
Queen contest,” Stanbro said.
“I’m not sure if they are going
to be totally ’50s or super fancy or
what!”
No matter what, it’s going to be
a fun way to spend some time with
your valentine on the big holiday.
Stanbro is looking forward to
rocking out her Valentine’s Day.

Join local birders on Feb. 16-19

from a perch nearby. A woodpecker
knock-knock-knocking on a tree trunk.
Your yard is most likely full of different
avian species, flying about during
their busy day-to-day lives.
The Great Backyard Bird Count Feb.
16-19 is the perfect time to stop and
take notice of them. Simply watch your
yard for as short as 15 minutes or as
long as you wish for one day or more
of the four-day event and then submit
your findings at birdcount.org.
“I think it’s good for people to know
what birds we have in the area,” said
Dickinson County naturalist Ashley
Hansen.
Anyone who would like some help
identifying birds may come to the Dickinson
County Nature Center 10 a.m.-
noon Friday, Feb. 16, and Hansen will
help visitors document which birds are
seen in the Kenue Park avian courtyard.
She will assist visitors in identifying
species, with the help of bird field
guides, and will give helpful hints on
how to tell different species apart.
“They can discover what birds we
have, and they might stumble upon
something they didn’t know existed or
was here,” Hansen said.
Local birder Lee Schoenewe will
also lead a birding trek during the Great
Backyard Bird Count.
Meet at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at the
Dickinson County Nature Center and
caravan throughout the county to check
for open water along Milford Creek and
to take a walk through the woods to
look for birds.
“Like the Christmas Bird Count, the
Great Backyard Bird Count is an important
source of citizen science data about
winter bird populations across North
America and the world,” Schoenewe
said. “You can help us add northwest
Iowa bird sightings into that important
effort.”
In 2017, the Great Backyard Bird
Count had 214,018 participants who
documented 5,940 species. The most
frequently reported species was the
northern cardinal, and the most numerous
species reported was the snow
goose. F

Concert for
the
KIDDOS
PLAC brings children’s
performer to the stage
The Pearson Lakes Art Center is bringing
someone new to the stage who
is sure to delight the most discerning
audience: Kids.
Justin Roberts and The Not Ready for
Naptime Players, who play music for kids
and families, will be performing at 2 p.m.
on Saturday, Feb. 17, in the Lauridsen
Performing Arts Theatre at the Pearson
Lakes Art Center in Okoboji.
This will be the first time for the group
to perform at PLAC.
“We are bringing him to PLAC because
he is a two-time Grammy nominee, and
we thought it would be fun to have a
kid’s rock band here for something different,”
said Alesia Johnson with the
Pearson Lakes Art Center.
Performing music for kids is what Justin
Roberts is good at and loves to do.
“For nearly 20 years, Roberts has been
creating the soundtrack to families’ lives,
helping kids navigate the joys and sorrows
of growing up and parents remember
their own childhoods. Along with his
band, The Not Ready for Naptime Players,
they have travelled the globe, from
Hong Kong to New York, and Miami to
Seattle,” according to his website.
Roberts music career started back in
the 1990s as a member of an indie-rock
band. He started working as a Montessori
preschool teacher, and soon he was writing
and singing songs for kids.
His first CD was released in 1997,
“Great Big Sun.” He began performing
all around the world along with his band
The Not Ready For Naptime Players.
Roberts has received three Grammy
nominations for his work including for
“Jungle Gym” in 2011, “Recess” in 2013
and “Lemonade” in 2018.

The group has performed all over the
world. They have performed in front of
millions of people on “The Today Show,”

DC’s National Geographic Live, LA’s
Getty Museum, Seattle’s Moore Theater,
Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits and
Chicago’s Ravinia.
Roberts recently released his 13th album
for families and it’s titled “Lemonade.”
It contains 12 new original songs
and “is the musical equivalent of an
impromptu lemonade stand popping up
in the summer heat.”
While the concert is geared towards
kids, it should also be a fun experience
for moms and dads.
“I believe that all kids would enjoy
this kid friendly concert, especially elementary
aged kids, through 6th grade,”
Johnson said. “We are excited to see kids
here learning about, and enjoying live

“Next to Normal”
on stage at
Northwestern
The musical “Next to Normal” will be
presented by Northwestern College theatre
Feb. 15 and 22–24 at 7:30 p.m. and
Feb. 17 at 2 and 7:30 p.m. The Pulitzer Prize
and Tony Award-winning show will be performed
in the England Theatre of the DeWitt
Theatre Arts Center. The rock musical deals
with grief, depression and
other mental illness.
The performance
on Thursday, Feb. 22,
will be followed by
a panel discussion
with members of
Northwestern’s psychology
and social
work departments as
well as a mental health
counselor from the college’s
wellness center.
“Next to Normal,” with music by Tom
Kitt and lyrics by Brian Yorkey, focuses on
the lives and relationships of the Goodman
family. Diana Goodman has bipolar disorder,
and her worsening condition and selfdestructive
behavior is affecting her family
and their stability and mental health.
Director Robert Hubbard chose the play in
part because of the powerful impact it had on
him when he first saw it.
“I saw ‘Next to Normal’ on Broadway in
2009 and loved it. It’s a very serious subject,
but — perhaps because of the wonderful
rock music score — the show is also full of
humor and joy. It’s truly a remarkable piece
of theatre with powerful themes of redemption
and hope.”
Just nine musicals have won the Pulitzer
Prize for drama (the most recent being
“Hamilton”); “Next to Normal” won in
2010. The show also won three Tony Awards,
including the award for best score.
Tickets for “Next to Normal” are $8 for
adults and $4 for students and are available
starting Feb. 5 for Theatre Patrons and Feb.
6–24 for the general public.

Little Swan Lake Winery will be hosting their annual dinner

Trick Pony performs
at Wild Rose Casino
If there’s one thing Trick Pony knows when it comes to
music, it’s how to stay relevant in an ever changing business

Queen’s Cartroonists

The Queen’s Cartnoonists will perform on Monday, Feb. 12, at 6:30 p.m.

The Queen’s Cartoonists are a jazz band specializing in music
from cartoons. The music runs the gamut from lightning fast swing arrangements

involving the cartoons and their composers.
