TIME TO READ - THE LUCKIEST MAN Like many empires that invade foreign lands, the Portuguese do not get along with the local people. There are many reasons for this, but the principal reason is slavery. In many places, the Portuguese settlers think they are superior beings and enslave the local people. It is common for the Portuguese to take slaves from one colony and sell them in another. For example, many Portuguese traders in Macau kidnap Chinese children and sell them in Goa. I do not agree with this practice and dedicated my time in the colony to ending this inhuman business. That was my job: to end slavery. Unfortunately, there are many corrupt Chinese police officers that cooperate with the Portuguese slave traders. That is how I ended up in a Chinese prison. Am I a criminal? No, unless you believe freeing slaves to be a crime. Then yes, I am guilty, for I liberated hundreds of slaves and sunk dozens of slave ships. One night as I was sleeping, the corrupt police chief entered my house and arrested me. He put me in prison and a judge sentenced me to death. I was scheduled to be hung on October 15th at noon. How am I still alive? That is an excellent question. And the answer will explain to you why I am the luckiest man in the world. On October 14th, as I lay in my cell, I heard a series of loud bangs and crashes. The floor and the walls of the prison started to shake. Officers screamed and ran away from the prison. I thought the British Navy was attacking the colony, but the truth was even more incredible. A major earthquake had struck the southern Chinese coast, damaging the majority of the buildings, including the prison. The door of my cell had fallen down, so I simply walked out. I made my way to the port and crawled onto a ship that was setting sail. A week later I was in Goa. Now, I am here speaking with you and that is why I am the luckiest man in the world. 66
