stick and makes a hopscotch pattern and a stone and starts jumping. He behaves a little restless and unfocused, getting tired. Maybe the lights are changing from day to night. The child crawls into his fathers lap and falls asleep. A lovely moment of quiet happiness between father and son passes.) FATHER Sleep my dear With hope of lovely tranquil dreams Sleep my dear With a peaceful dreamy smile (The father falls asleep) (Sounds heard from the forest, several people coming, although trying to be silent. The stranger friend they just shared their meal with are approaching. SUGGESTION: This friend may be appearing only in the fathers head? The persons Leitmotif may be recognized, although this time askew and twisted?) FATHER (waking up disorientated) Hey, friend, are you back already? Hungry again? (Rising, looking dreamy and confused. Trying not to wake the child) I’m sorry, we don’t have any… (sees the soldiers coming further away) Oh, no, you brought the soldiers to us? You.. You betrayed us! (People are yelling, father and son flees. Gunshots are heard. Chaos) CHILD Aaaaaaa!!! (Screaming as he gets hit by a bullet) Instrumental intermezzo 10

SCENE 6 - At the church (The child has a gunshot wound in his stomach, and they have gotten away from the soldiers. The father now knows that soldiers are hunting them. The father is carrying the child.) CHILD (tries to downplay how hurt he is to not scare his father, because there’s nothing more scary in the whole world, than when his father is scared and upset) That silly gun bit me in my tummy. The wound bleeds a bit, but doesn't hurt much. I am not scared at all, father! FATHER Poor you! I’m so sorry. I’m so, so sorry! But we must keep going. It is dangerous to stay here. Rest here in my arms, I will carry you. FATHER Look! A church! I can hear the choir sing. Maybe we can stay here for the night. (They approach the church, tries to open the door, but it is closed. We can see light and people inside, and we hear the psalm: "A mighty fortress is our God" from the inside.) CHOIR: A mighty Fortress is our God, A trusty Shield and Weapon; He helps us free from every need That hath us now o’ertaken. (*) FATHER (banging on the door) Open up! Please let us in! We need your help! My child is hurt, we need protection. Please have some compassion in this time of need. Is there a doctor here? (No response from the people inside) CHOIR With might of ours can naught be done, Soon were our loss effected; But for us fights the Valiant One, Whom God Himself elected. (*) FATHER The might of yours is nothing worth, You call upon your God, 11
