Likemostartists,myearlyworkhadbeengreatlyafectedbyinterpretationsofthevisualworldaroundme.Themostimportant influenceIdiscoveredearlyinmylife/work,theonecomponentthatwouldappeartimeaftertime,overdecades,wastheHorizon lineoftheMidwest,andtheAtlanticOcean.Thislinespoketomeonaverypersonalandemotionallevel.Idescribeditasthe divisionlinebetweentheskyandtheearth.(*1) Isoonaddedanothercompositionalelementtothework:acircle.Onatriptothefarm landsofPennsylvania,Ihadtakena numberof35mm slides.WhenItookthesepictures,Iwasstandinginalargefieldlookingwest,justasthesunhaddropped behindadistantmountain.Theoverallightwasdim.ImadewhatIthoughtwasacompensationwiththecameraforthelow light. Indoingso,Iopenedtheapertureofthecameraaltheway. Circle... BackinFlorida,whenIlookedattheseslides,Idiscoveredthatafew oftheslidesappearedtobeflawed.Therewasahalo,or circle,superimposedoverthelandscape.Atfirst,Ithoughttheslideswereruined.Butafterstudyingthem forsometimea revelationoccuredtome.Theslidesofthefieldwiththedarkmountainridgebeyondwerelight-struck,adifusedhalocirclingthe image.Irealizedtheseslideswereaportrayaloftherealityofthewaywesee.Ibecameawarethatourvision,intermsof focusingonaspecificobject,isverylimited.First,ourentireperipheralvisioniscontainedwithinacircle.Second,whenyoulookat anobject,theeyeautomaticalyfocusesdowntoalmostapinpoint.Forexample,ifyouweretolookatanapplesitingonabook andthebookisonatable,altheobjectsarewithinyourperipheralvision.However,ifyouweretolookatjusttheapple,theapple istheonlyobjectthatisinsharpfocus.Yourentireperipheralvisionbecomesblured.(*2) Asidefrom thisvisualphenomenon,overtime,Ibecamemoreinfatuatedwiththecircleitself.Ibegantoputalthesubject materofapaintinginsidealargecircle.Iwouldpickapointinsidethecircletofocusonandpaintthesubjectwithsharpness,in focus.Astheeyemovesfrom thatfocalpoint,acrossthecanvas,thepaintedimagewoulddifuse.Thefurthertheeyemovedfrom thatfocalpoint,themoreabstractthepaintingwouldbecome,ameresuggestionoftheactualsubject. Thecirclebecame,forme,thesymbolofinfinity,aneverendingline.Atthesametimealthatwaswithinthecirclewas contained.
