2017 EVERGREEN 31
EVERGREEN’S GOOD MUSIC AWARD
In the summer issue we honoured Philip Lane and this
time we pay tribute to his musical companion and
conductor, Gavin Sutherland. Together they have produced
a whole range of CDs, specifically of British light music
which would never otherwise have been premiered or
repeated. A marvellous achievement. Well done!
Gavin has many other strings to his bow, however, and in addition to
conducting all over the world he is in demand as a pianist, composer and
arranger. Currently Musical Director of the English Ballet he has worked
with many other orchestras, especially associated on the recording front
with the Royal Ballet Sinfonia and City of Prague Symphony Orchestra.
In 2009 he succeeded Ernest Tomlinson as Chairman of the Light Music
Society to which he has since made an extremely valuable contribution. He
has also appeared many times with the BBC Concert Orchestra particularly
on Friday Night is Music Night, and has also appeared at The Proms, notably in
a dance-based “Strictly” concert narrated by Katie Derham.
Congratulations on your award and keep up the good work Gavin.
of which was Ivy Benson’s All Girl
Band with whom he got on very well.
Moore’s BFN producer was Sgt.
Trevor Hill who, when he heard his
CO, Col. “Bunny” Warren, speak
said, “You’re the voice of the Chief
Ovaltiney,” (see Evergreen, Spring
2001). Warren’s immediate response
was “Tell anyone and I’ll kill you!”
Hill, however, took great delight in
informing Lt. Moore of the fact and
also suggested he might do better as
a model rather than an actor. Moore
later responded with the message
“Still acting and not doing too badly!”
an article about the author H.E. Bates
(below), written by his granddaughter,
Victoria Wicks. Bates’ stories,
including The Darling Buds of May (see
Evergreen, Summer 2017), are wellknown
but his wartime writing has,
until now, been largely overlooked.
