82 EVERGREEN Autumn This

82 EVERGREEN Autumn This beautiful picture was taken at Branscombe, a village of around 500 inhabitants overlooking Lyme Bay on the English Channel. Located in the East Devon (AONB) Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it lies on the Jurassic Coast not far from the border with Dorset. Thatched roofs can be made of sedge, water reeds, rushes, heather or straw, and although lighter than traditional materials are hard to insure because of the obvious fire risk. MIKE HAYWARD

2017 EVERGREEN 83 Standing proudly above the Taff Valley near the village of Tongwynlais, north of Cardiff, Castell Coch is Welsh for “Red Castle”. The site dates back to the Norman period and the ruins, after being inherited by the 3rd Marquess of Bute, were rebuilt by William Burges in the last quarter of the 19th century. The result was an interior high-quality Victorian gem encased in an exterior European fairy-tale design. Surrounded by beech woods in an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest), the property is now managed by the Welsh heritage agency, Cadw. BRIAN PHILLIPS
