Boys’ Varsity

Boys’ Varsity Basketball How can one describe the state champion basketball team? How about Terrific!, Fantastic! and Awesome! to name just a few adjectives. This year’s team has set school records left and right. Led by co-captains Greg Boff and Brian Flynn they achieved a new school record of 21-3, and they were able to win 13 of those games in a row while holding their opponents to an average of 43 points per game. In addition they emerged as the champions of the Dwight Englewood Tournament. But one of the most amazing feats was their victories over Rutgers Prep and Pennington in the States, although they had lost to them previously during the regular season. "This team was really a team, all of the members worked together to make all of their wins a combined effort.” stated Coach Ray Kovonuk, who coached his 200th win at Wardlaw-Hartridge this year, against Morrison-Beard. Therefore, instead of citing one most valuable player of the year, Coach Kovonuk awarded the MVP to the whole varsity team, comprised of Greg Boff, Brian Flynn, David Hall, David Lombardi, Irving Greene, Brian Culp, Tom Voder, Rob Darden, Sean McMullen, Brad Buzzi, Mark Oberschewen, and David Joy. With this gesture he emphasized how valuable teamwork and coherence were in shaping one of Wardlaw-Hartridge’s best basketball teams ever. LEFT TO RIGHT, FRONT ROW: S. McMullen, B. Flynn, D. One of the seniors profiled in this years yearbook for basketball is senior Irv Greene. He is a three year veteran of the varsity team, scoring an average of 17 points per game to compile 378 points for this season. Irv has also led the boys varsity basketball team in scoring and in rebounding. For all of his efforts at the Dwight Englewood Tournament, he was named the most valuable player of the tournament. This year was Irv’s first year to be named to the All Star Boys Basketball team of the B division of the Independent School League. IRVING GREENE Greg Boff Senior Greg Boff, one of the co-captains, of this years championship basketball team is being profiled in this years yearbook. He is a very dedicated player, who also would drive all of the way from Mt. Snow, in a snow storm, just to make sure he got to a game on time. I doubt you could find anyone that dedicated. Greg led the team this year in assists, and he scored an average of 6 points per game, to compile 154 points for the season. This was also Greg’s first year of being named to the All Star Boys basketball team of the B division of the Independent School League. Brian Flynn a three year veteran of the varsity boys basketball team and this years co-captain is one of the seniors being profiled this year. He played guard this year, and acquired the name Mr. Defense. One of Brians jobs on the team was to guard the best player on the opponents team. His talents did not end at defense, he was also a valuable asset to the team’s offense, averaging 6 points a game, to compile 145 points this season. Brian was also a good leaper who possessed great court presence. BRIAN FLYNN 195
