Wardlaw- HartridgeToHost Ivy Wrestling "This year’s Varsity Wrestling season was a character building season, we had to learn how to lose with as much grace and sportsmanship as we won,” stated Coach Les Rudnyanszky. The Varsity Wrestling Team was led this year by tri-captains Bruce Lackland, Tom Byleckie, and Vinnie Venezia. This was the team’s second time holding the Prep Ivy League Meet, in which the team placed third overall. The Varsity Wrestling Team placed eighth overall in the states though three wrestlers placed third, and they were seniors Tom Byleckie, Vinnie Venezia, and junior Dave Dittman. The two awards were given out at the winter awards assembly. The MVP and the Coaches award, which went to Vinnie Venezia and Andy Adams respectively. The team had a lot of support and help from its managers Elise Goldstein, Cindy Mallin, Jill Kenny, and Jill Sorger Schedule VARSITY WRESTLING RECORD RAMS OPPONENTS 41 Pennington 30 II Pingry 52 16 Roselle Catholic 49 3 Keyport 63 38 Admiral Farragut 27 27 Newark Academy 40 12 Monroe 58 24 Neumann Prep 39 30 Rutgers Prep 33 Hun Tournament (3rd place) II Greenbrook 51 54 St. Pius 9 38 Saddle River 30 39 Dunellen 20 League Meet (3rd place) VARSITY WRESTLING: LEFT TO RIGHT, FRONT ROW: Coach D. Senior Vinnie Venezia, tri-captain of the Varsity Wrestling Team had an outstanding season. He compiled an extremely impressive new school wrestling record of 20-2 at the 122 weight class. Vinnie placed first in the Hun Tournament, third in the Prep Ivy League Tournament and third in the wrestling states. He was the recipient of this year s MVP award. "Vinnie was a very enthusiastic wrestler, who never seemed to tire, and he was a real leader," stated fellow wrestlers. Vinnie’s career record on Varsity, which has been two years, is an almost unbelievable record 44-6. VINCENT VENEZIA BRUCE LACKLAND Senior Bruce Lackland is being profiled this year, in the yearbook. He is a tri-captain of the team, and he is also a four year veteran of the varsity wrestling team. Weighing in this year at 188 Bruce won 16 out of his 20 matches. Wrestlers at Bruce s weight tend to be either very good or not so great, yet he managed consistency and a level of skill difficult to maintain under these conditions. Last year Bruce placed second in the states, and this year he came in first in the Hun tournament. Bruce is a very dedicated wrestler, one of whom we could use more of,” stated Coach Les Rudnyanszky. Tom Byleckie a three year veteran of the Varsity Wrestling Team is being profiled this year. At the weight class of 129 he won 19 out of his 23 matches. He placed first at the Hun Tournament, and he placed third in the state finals. Tommy is a leader of the team and that is one of the reasons he was bestowed the honor of being tri-captain. Tommy was always there when we needed to pull out a win,” stated some of his fellow grapplers. Tom also was a "weight-loss leader” in the famed wrestlers activity of shedding excess pounds just prior to matches. THOMAS BYLECKIE
