Although the role played by the Trustees
remains a mystery to most students, they
play an active part in school life as is in
creasingly evident in their Centennial activities.
The plans for the Centennial have
been in effect for the past year. Dr. James
Sorger heads the Centennial Committee,
while under him there are many committees
with chairpeople. The publicity for the Centennial,
chaired by Ms. Patricia Turner,
planned the kick-off picnic in May, 1982,
and has continued to provide the school
with other festivities since. The Centennial
Historical Committee, chaired by Mr. Peter
Stevenson, has been supplying the school,
through the Beacon, with an in-depth per
spective of the history of both Wardlaw
and Hartridge.
One of the most active, non-Centennial.
committees is the Development Committee,
which is co-chaired by Mrs. Fredrick
Lackland. Mr. M. Peter Madsen and Mr. David
Pearson. They have worked very hard
with the Century Challenge Fund, which,
under the direction of the several chairpersons
including the above and Mr. Morrison,
Mr. Del Vento, and Mrs. Childers, has been
successful thus far. Through the support of
alumni/ae, parents, and foundational
grants, the school is on its way towards its
goal of one million dollars.
Finally, a new committee was created
this year, the Faculty and Curriculum Committee.
This committee looks at the philos
ophies of the school. Its function is to sug
gest and to learn. The committee also allows
each department to express its own needs
and concerns directly to the board. Al
though the committee has only met twice
this year, they have discussed the use of
writing skills in every subject and the en
larging role of the computer. Mr. Ayres has
stated, as the year rolls to an end, that
working with the committees and the
Trustees as a whole has helped him a great
deal in running the school, and he looks
forward to helping the school into another
century.
