01 MESSAGE TO THE HERD As your new president let me introduce myself. I am a runner and I like saying that. My first introduction to the Chips was at CIM in 1990. I kept hearing people along the course yelling “Go Chips”. I didn’t realize how common that cheer was until the following year when, as a new Club member, I heard it again while running Napa Valley Marathon. I noticed that at every race people recognized the Chip logo and cheered our runners. This was pretty cool and I liked the support. I transformed from the guy that would quote Groucho Marx, or was it Shakespeare, saying: “I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member”, and became the guy that was enjoying the benefits of membership in a club that had lot to offer. Twenty some years later that is as true as ever. Let me admit I wrote that back when I was first elected high dunger in 2012. Here I am in 2018 and it’s still true. So bear with me as I engage in self plagiarism Let me describe just a few of the benefits the club has given me. Friendships and running pals became more than training partners they developed into life long friends through the Chips. Training, Tuesday workouts, weekend tempos, and long runs enabled me to become a better and more focused runner. Through consistency in my training, club coaching (then with George Parrott), and the challenge of training with like minded runners, I saw results and personal gains. Camaraderie is often misunderstood. Webster calls it mutual trust, friendship, and good fellowship. But it’s also about having a shared goal. The idea of being part of a team is a pretty special thing, and that is why I have remained a Buffalo Chip. There is a huge amount of tradition and history associated with the Chips. The running community is a different place now than it was in 1974 when the club was founded. Today’s runner has options never imagined when the Chip began. With the growth of beginner groups, charity programs, and a host of other running clubs to choose from, we face the challenge of continuing to be a major force in the running community. As president, my goal is to keep our long standing tradition of an open door to all athletes, runners, walkers, non-racers, and elites; and to continue our role in the community. I would like to see more member participation with more Chips showing up at races and enjoying the benefits of all our training. With our volunteers and the support of the new Board, our club can become more relevant to our community and a magnet in attracting new and seasoned runners. I promise to help make our club more fit, and to support our club members in becoming even fitter. One more thing, if you haven’t already done so, please renew your membership, and tell a friend!
