JUST US BRICKS 1901 Industrial Shop Building Chimney Bricks in 2014 There’s an art to making bricks just like there is an art to leadership and making relationships work. Our relationships are either built up or torn down with our words. It is only when we are connected to each other and have full access to the resources that we need that our highest value can be realized. Like people, each brick has nuances. Our perspectives make us unique. Two people can look at the same object and see something completely different. ROAR! “LEADERS SPEND TIME TRYING TO GET OTHERS TO THINK HIGHLY OF THEM, WHEN INSTEAD THEY SHOULD TRY TO GET THEIR PEOPLE TO THINK MORE HIGHLY OF THEMSELVES. IT'S WONDERFUL WHEN THE PEOPLE BELIEVE IN THEIR LEADER. IT' S MORE WONDERFUL WHEN THE LEADER BELIEVES IN THEIR PEOPLE! YOU CAN'T HOLD A MAN DOWN WITHOUT STAYING DOWN WITH HIM.” 38 BOOKER T. WASHINGTON Although there are single images, facts, and events, there are always at least two sides to every story. The following poems about the CI Industrial Shop bricks show the differences and similarities in thought between a descendant of a CI Alumna who is a Generation Xer and a Baby Boomer 39 who attended the school. ROAR! “THE FACT THAT THE INDIVIDUAL HAS BEHIND AND SURROUNDING HIM PROUD FAMILY HISTORY AND CONNECTION SERVES AS A STIMULUS TO HELP OVERCOME OBSTACLES WHEN STRIVING FOR SUCCESS.” 40 BOOKER T. WASHINGTON Just us bricks. We’re all that’s left. Someone took the time to shape us. Someone built us into something meaningful. We contained the fire, provided warmth and helped to create a wealth of resources for Our Community. Look at us now. We’re disconnected, we’re sitting here waiting for something to happen. People are often just the same. Anyway, I’m just a brick, what do I know? Without strong leadership, without communication, without other raw materials, it’s just us bricks. Let’s rebuild something meaningful on the hallowed ground on which we sit. Please, let’s do more than be just us bricks. By Davina Irvin Bricks with over a century of legacy, Bricks that remind us of days gone by-- Is it a great beginning or an abrupt ending? It all depends. Can you hear their cry? I wonder how those bricks were viewed decades ago when they were first laid upon the ground? What if those men had ignored the strength within? Or what if they were left alone and never made a sound? How many years since 1966? When is the time for us to address the need? Just exactly what should be important about those bricks? Who will take the lead? By Rita Irvin ROAR! “HONESTY AND OPENNESS IS ALWAYS THE FOUNDATION OF INSIGHTFUL DIALOGUE.” 41 bell hooks THE TIGER & THE TORCH Page | 39
