4 . FLOURISHING CHURCHES, FLOURISHING COMMUNITIES<br />
INTRODUCTION<br />
There is grow<strong>in</strong>g recognition of the role of faith with<strong>in</strong> development. Although<br />
the global North has experienced a grow<strong>in</strong>g secularisation, for most people <strong>in</strong><br />
the global South, spirituality is <strong>in</strong>tegral to their underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of the world <strong>and</strong><br />
is therefore central to the decisions they make.<br />
Faith has been l<strong>in</strong>ked to provid<strong>in</strong>g hope, purpose <strong>and</strong><br />
self-belief to <strong>in</strong>dividuals <strong>and</strong> groups. Faith can provide<br />
shared values that, <strong>in</strong> turn, build a sense of belong<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>and</strong> identity that is <strong>in</strong>tegral to unity <strong>and</strong> social<br />
movements for change.<br />
With<strong>in</strong> Christianity, the <strong>in</strong>herent values of justice<br />
<strong>and</strong> equality present potential foundational pr<strong>in</strong>ciples<br />
for driv<strong>in</strong>g change towards a fairer society. Not only<br />
this, but local <strong><strong>church</strong>es</strong> are emerg<strong>in</strong>g as development<br />
actors with the ability to provide a safe space <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>clusive environment. They are often focal po<strong>in</strong>ts<br />
for the <strong>community</strong>, are historically rooted, <strong>and</strong><br />
have popular legitimacy, <strong>in</strong>frastructure, networks<br />
<strong>and</strong> motivation.<br />
We cannot presume that the <strong>church</strong> always has a<br />
positive <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>in</strong> society. Therefore, there is a<br />
need to underst<strong>and</strong> how the local <strong>church</strong> is play<strong>in</strong>g<br />
its role <strong>and</strong> how a positive <strong>in</strong>fluence can be promoted<br />
<strong>and</strong> encouraged.<br />
The aim of this research was to explore the local<br />
<strong>church</strong>’s role <strong>in</strong> promot<strong>in</strong>g social change <strong>in</strong> Ug<strong>and</strong>an<br />
<strong>communities</strong>. It focused on <strong>Tearfund</strong>’s <strong>church</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>community</strong> <strong>mobilisation</strong> (CCM) approach, to discover<br />
how <strong>in</strong>dividuals <strong>and</strong> <strong>communities</strong> have experienced<br />
changes <strong>in</strong> their well-be<strong>in</strong>g over a five-year period.<br />
The research highlights the key positive <strong>and</strong> negative<br />
drivers of change, <strong>and</strong> the overall positive <strong>and</strong> negative<br />
changes <strong>in</strong> the lives of those <strong>in</strong>terviewed.<br />
