Firstlooks Brieftest Leisuredrive Occasion Andy Jenkinson tests a new model with the ever-popular Vivante layout pictures Andy Jenkinson Twin doors at the rear offer easy access to the accommodation Leisuredrive are no strangers to building on all sorts of vehicles, including Transits. Fans will be glad to hear that Ford’s new version, one of the best yet, is the company’s choice of base for the brand new Occasion. Exterior The Occasion will be built on new ★★★★ Transits at a price of around £44,000 for a well-equipped campervan, which we think seems like great value. But they can also build a new Occasion unit on a pre-owned van, and that’s what we had for testing. This Transit was finished in frost white and in excellent condition. With its smart graphics applied, the Occasion gives a good impression even though alloy wheels aren’t fitted. Interior The Occasion is based on Leisuredrive’s popular Vivante layout – a wise ★★★★ choice, because this is a well-designed campervan. The sliding entrance door on the nearside welcomes you straight into the lounge area, which will seat two with ease. Side windows allow a decent amount of natural light in, although they’re tinted for privacy. A swivel table is placed in the centre for meal times, and LED lighting ensures you’re never in the dark. The lounge seating makes into a double bed or twin singles. This new sky view roof light allows in floods of illumination Price £29,990* Engine 2.2 diesel Power 130 bhp Berths 2 More information *For our example based on a used Transit; new vehicle £44,000 The ample lounge seating for two makes into one or two beds The spacious interior includes a kitchen with oven and fridge A manual flush cassette loo is hidden away on the van’s offside Facilities The kitchen is at the rear on the ★★★★ nearside, and comes with a stainless steel sink and two-burner hob which also has a grill/ oven combination. This area also features a three-way 60-litre fridge and is well lit by LEDs. It’s a good size and offers excellent storage. Glass tops are used to add to the work surface, and overall it’s well designed and practical to use. No washroom is fitted as such, but the Occasion does have a discreetly stowed manual flush cassette loo. This is ideal for emergencies, with the emptying point found inside at the rear of the van inside. It’s nicely hidden away and yet ready to use in seconds. The Occasion is a brand new high-top Ford Transit conversion that looks like being a strong seller Overall It’s not VW, but the Ford is cheaper than ★★★★ the T6 and still a joy to drive. The Occasion will appeal to buyers who want a new base vehicle with Leisuredrive’s quality. It’s a bargain at £44,000 and may steal some sales from the Vivante. 2 Scottish Caravans & Motorhomes winter 2017
