Book Review THE DISMAL SWAMP NOBODY KNOWS: The Immortal Dismalites, the capture of the Arrow, and other historic events brought to life for the first time. By William Hoffman and William Trout, III. VA: Virginia Canals and Navigations Society. PB $19.95 + tax; ISBN 978-1- 888838-27-5 Introduction I am a retired applied criminal justice professional and professor of criminology. I was drawn to this book because I have seen the extraordinary illustrations done in other projects by William Hoffman. As a lifelong NC boy, like most others, I have been mesmerized by the Great Dismal Swamp. It is important to emphasize that this book pulls together historical facts not previously presented in such a fashion and provides information of significant value. Summary of Content This book has a multi-purpose identity. Indeed, it may serve several functions depending upon one’s needs. The reader can be enraptured with it as a history book. Young people can be enticed into academic / intellectual interests by its colorful and exciting illustrations, as well as its fascinating explanations. Adults may learn of contemporary sources of interest and exploration while grasping aspects of how our county developed as it did. Clearly the visitor to the NC/VA area will find fascinating sites to explore. The nature of our socio-political conditions and aspects of race relations will be clarified as will our local geography. The book is a rare gem and should be in the hands of all youth in school as well as all thoughtful adults. It begins with an outline of the contents and a contemporary map of the NC VA Dismal Swamp area. There are 19 short chapters, all brought to life with vivid illustrations of the events discussed. Chapter 1 explains the several possible causes of the birth of circular Lake Drummond, argued by some as created by the crash of a flying saucer. Other explanations are given. Chapter 2 shows the Lady of the Lake and the story of her and her lover. Chapter 3 & 4 addresses the fascinating beginning of the 1728 survey of the NC VA line, giving birth to the Dismal Swamp survey. President George Washing played a part in this story and visited the digging by slave labor of the Washington Ditch, discussed in Chapter 5. Chapters 6, 7, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 17 vividly describes and powerfully illustrates war time battles and the role of slaves during that period. These critical chapters portray life of those years and the events of the Swamp, creating personal meaning for those circumstances. These chapters make the book required reading for all, especially youth living in the NC VA area at this time. Chapters 8,9,10, 16, 18 and 19 vividly and accurately describe the building of the physical artifacts making up the Great Dismal Swamp Canal. The precision and beauty with which our history is presented is profound. Analysis and Evaluation This powerful book is highly recommended as an intellectual experience, a visual delight and a scholarly sourcebook of the highest order. I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream… For Granitas! By Rosie Hawthorne It’s summertime and the livin’ is hot. What better way to cool down and re-energize than by consuming that wonderfully refreshing Sicilian thirst-quencher – the intensely flavored ice known as granita. Back in the Middle Ages, the Sicilian colonizers – Romans, Greeks, Spanish, and Arabs – used to harvest the snow of Mount Etna and pack it into stone grottoes along the slopes. The nevaroli, or snow-gatherers, would retrieve their chilly treasures from the slopes during the sizzling summer months to concoct those half-frozen crystalline mixtures of water and sugar, flavored with rose petals or jasmine, cocoa or coffee, wine or sweetened fruit essences, including their wonderful Sicilian lemons. Every granita starts out with a simple syrup, which is a mixture of water and sugar. The sugar and water mixture is brought to a boil and then simmered until the sugar dissolves. Fruit purée and/or fruit juices are added to the simple syrup and the mixture is poured into a shallow pan and placed in the freezer. Every 30 minutes the mixture is raked with a fork, the outside scraped towards the center. Once you’ve learned the basic technique, you’re open to a world of icy fruit and flavor combinations. Fresh Orange Granita juice of 6 oranges 1/2 cup water 1/4 cup sugar juice of 1 lime Maraschino cherries and juice Make a simple syrup with the sugar and water. Combine in small saucepan, bring to boil, reduce to simmer until sugar dissolves, and cool. Mix orange juice, simple syrup, and lime juice. Pour into 8-inch square dish. Set in freezer and rake with a fork, scraping toward the center, every 30-40 minutes, for 3-4 hours. I like to serve these in orange cups. Top with cherries and a little cherry juice. Here’s the link if you’re reading the printed Albemarle Tradewinds: Pineapple Granita 1 fresh pineapple 1/2 cup water 1/4 cup sugar juice of one lime Strawberry slices zest of one lime Combine sugar and water in small saucepan. Bring to boil, reduce to simmer until sugar is completely dissolved. Let cool. Peel, core, and chop pineapple into chunks. Process pineapple, simple syrup, and lime juice until smooth. Pour into 9 x 11 inch pan and set in freezer. Every 30 minutes or so, rake the granita with a fork and return to freezer. Keep raking for 3-4 hours until you get the desired texture.
