Lenten Lunch By: Rev. Chip Broadfoot For at least the past fifty years, Christ Episcopal Church has offered Noonday services followed by lunches every Tuesday during the season of Lent. At 12:05 we gather to worship together, and then eat a delicious luncheon prepared by the Episcopal Church Women. The purpose of the worship is to invite clergy from other churches in the downtown Elizabeth City area to preach, as well as the congregations to share in the fellowship of a meal. The mealtime is a time of hospitality and friendship. We lift up our common interest of doing the ministry of Jesus Christ together in the world. So, while we may differ in worship style, we are inspired by this common purpose. This year the churches involved in the Lenten Luncheons at Christ Episcopal Church are: Cann Memorial Presbyterian Church, Blackwell Baptist Church, First United Methodist Church, Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church, First Baptist Church, and Forerunner Ministries. Our forty day Lenten season each year prepares us for the events of Holy Week, which begins on Palm Sunday, and ends with the Triduum. The Triduum is the period of three days that begins with the liturgy on the evening of Maundy Thursday (commemorating the Last Supper), the vigil of Good Friday (many churches incorporate the Stations of the Cross this day remembering the Crucifixion), and ends with Easter Sunday resurrection services (celebrating Christ’s victory over the Cross).
