Common sense financial

Common sense financial preparation for the common man Continued from last month.... Article series by: Publius Unless you live in an area not requiring heating, a reliable secondary source of heat must also be provided. A fireplace will not do the job as most of the heat is lost up the chimney. Quality sleeping bags rated to at least 15 degrees (Depending on your climate) are a must. Provide a sleeping cap or head covering of some type as a great deal of the body’s heat is lost thru an uncovered head. Only you can decide what type of back-up heating would be best for your situation. Keep at least enough cash at home sufficient to cover 90 days or more of expenses. In a real crisis you cannot depend on systems which support use of checks, debit cards and credit cards to be available. Use all small bills, nothing larger than a $20 with plenty of $5’s and $1’s. When preparing, one gets to keep everything purchased while providing the most valuable insurance possible for both self and family. Nothing goes to waste. What you are buying are tangible assets representing a storehouse of everyday necessities which will be ultimately utilized by you. If at any point you feel the need for such items has passed, simply consume the items of food and sell any equipment. That feeling of being well prepared helps get thru another day in a very nervous world. A few facts for your consideration: According to Global Finance Magazine, in their most recent annual list of the 50 safest banks in the world, only 5 are US based and the highest rank of any of those five is 39th place. American banks are at greater risk now than 2007/2008 due to exposure thru complex instruments called derivatives. These are the same instruments which played a major role in the bank failures of 2008 and could have created a modern day depression rather than a very prolonged and painful recession. Those levels now stand at 273 trillion as compared to the 2008 level of 187 trillion. This represents a 45% increase! We have quadrupled our money supply in six years while more than doubling our national debt in the same length of time! Even McDonalds has closed more than 700 stores. No one knows where this road will lead. It appears we can expect a continuation of gross overreach by government in all areas of our lives. Add to that the radical groups now represented by unknown numbers in our country, plus our welfare-warfare attitude and you have the potential for a perfect storm unlike any seen before. I feel many can benefit by visiting the website of Robert Wayne Atkins, P. E. or as he is better known, ‘GRANDPAPPY’. (www.grandpappy.org) He has written a series of books which I consider the best in the field. I would not be without them. You will find his website a great point of practical reference and entertainment . The information and suggestions presented in this series of articles are for entertainment purposes only. Does watching it have any effect on us? Normal Fellow Dear Normal: Your question concerns everyone, as almost everyone has sexual urges for most of their life. The truth is we don’t know the impact of wide spread exposure to sexual images through the internet, as this is a new issue. Take a look at the Virginian-Pilot for 10/11/15, page 4 - The Sunday Break, for an article that discusses your question. That article discusses some of the few studies on porn addition and indicates it is real and touches a lot of men and women. Apparently there is some indication substantial addition to porn may alter brain structures. Dear Dr. Crime: Has the mess in Ferguson involving race conflicts and police has an impact on police work? Are we less safe because of that? Cop Enthusiast Dear Enthusiast: Those I know in law enforcement, any kind of agency, are noble and responsible professionals. I do not deny that some bad apples in a profession that large must exist. Recall the scandal around Priests. The research reported in a psychological journal1 showed that the negative publicity associated with police actions, including the Ferguson, Missouri shooting of Michael Brown, was associated with less motivation and less proactive policing, but that for many officers, especially those with confidence in their authority and their agency, did good police work despite negative publicity. So, it seems the “Ferguson Effect” does not necessarily keep police from doing their jobs!
