The synthetic hormone is found unlabeled in ice cream, cheese, yogurt. Numerous studies have identified a direct correlation between cancer and rBGH/rBST. Synthetic growth hormones in cows, increases milk production, but also causes inflammation in the cow. The dairy industry uses antibiotics to mitigate the inflammation. Antibiotics don’t degrade after the dairy product is homogenized or pasteurized. Antibiotics and artificial hormones are not naturally occurring. Both should be identified as additives. Last April, Tyson Foods, promised to eliminate the use of human antibiotics in its chickens by 2017. Tyson’s Foods is one of the largest meat and poultry producers in the world. Their promise to eliminate “Human Antibiotics” by 2017 speaks volumes, and is not very comforting. What are human antibiotics anyway? It seems that the effort to remove all antibiotics from the American food chain is voluntary, and not a government priority. Also, not a government priority, is the labeling of GMO’s. In 2014 the Grocery Manufacturers Association filed suit against Vermont’s law requiring Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) labeling by 2016. The Grocer’s assert that the law is unnecessary as consumers can just buy products that are “Certified Organic”. The compromise will probably be a disclaimer such as “may contain GMO’s”. More to come on this complex, important issue, as it ascends in the courts. Finally, while writing this article on food additives, I happened upon the “Frontline” documentary on salmonella in poultry products. It’s available on u-tube and should be viewed. I’m kind of familiar with the subject and invite your feed-back, thoughts and comments. Eat quality foods. You are what you eat.
