Frisco Native American Museum MUSEUM SHARES RESEARCH MATERIALS Visitors may not always be aware that museums include learning and research opportunities beyond the “public” face of the institution. In addition to workshops and tours through the buildings and grounds, museum archives are a treasure throve for researchers. That is true of the Frisco Native American Museum & Natural History Center as well. In addition to the exhibits on display and thousands of artifacts in storage, the museum includes an extensive library on Native American history, culture, and art. Among the treasures in the library is a collection of materials on the Chiricahua Apache donated to the museum in the 1980’s. The collection was gathered by a former Deputy Director of the Bureau of Indian Affairs over a thirty year period and is recognized as one of the most comprehensive compilations of photographs and research materials available on Geronimo’s people. It includes approximately 700 negatives cross referenced with names of individuals as well as twenty linear feet of materials on the Chiricahua. Individuals have been able to use the materials to trace family members and private researchers, including doctoral students and authors, have utilized the collection as well as writers National Geographic magazine, the Smithsonian, the National Museum of the American Indian, and National Public Television. “We try to use every inch of the museum’s facilities in meeting our goals,’ said Carl Bornfriend, executive director, “ so it is always gratifying when we can include items from behind the scenes in our outreach efforts.” An exciting new option may be on the horizon for the materials. The producer of Ron Howard’s award winning movie, The Missing, recently talked with museum staff about a possible project involving the collection. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday.
