Location: Albuquerque is a city located in Bernalillo country in the

US state of New Mexico. In the 2010 census it had a population of

545,852 inhabitants. What places it as the most populated city in

the state (but not its capital, which is the city of Santa Fe) and a

population density of 1112 inhabitants / km².4 It is located on the

left bank of the Rio Grande. Its metropolitan area amounts to

887,077 inhabitants.

Reliefs: Its surface is rugged, with the southern foothills of the

Rocky Mountains to the north of the state (Sierra de la Sangre de

Cristo), large plains to the east, and plateaus and more mountains

to the south and west. The Rio Grande with its wide valley divides

the state from north to south.

State flag: The flag of New Mexico consists of a red sun, symbol of the zia (a branch of the Pueblo Indians), in a yellow field. The colors honor Isabel I of Castile and the conquerors who explored in her name. In 1920 a contest was organized to design the state flag, and the winner was Harry Mera, from Santa Fe. Mera, an archaeologist, was familiar with the symbol of the sun zia, found in a nineteenth-century vessel, and that had a meaning sacred to the natives, since the four is a number that symbolizes the circle of life: four winds, four seasons, four directions and four sacred obligations. The circle joins the 16 elements. Mera's design is the same as it is used today.
