We look forward to seeing you. CARA – CASTLETOWN ACTIVE RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION. Castletown Active Retirement Association is a member of the Active Retirement Ireland Organisation. The Group was formed in 2017 and is actively seeking to increase membership. Currently the members enjoy playing Indoor Mat Bowls at 11am on Tuesday mornings in the village hall and Pickle Ball at 7pm on Monday and Thursday evenings in the village hall. It is also hoped to arrange further activities, as requested by our members. Anyone who is interested in joining the group can make contact at any of these sessions. A full programme of events and excursions are being planned for 2018. IRISH CANCER SOCIETY FREE TRANSPORT SER- VICE FOR CHEMOTHER- APY TREATMENT The Irish Cancer Society operates a free transport service for patients attending hospital for chemotherapy treatment. Volunteer drivers pick the patient up at the door of their home, drop them at the hospital door, then when they are finished their treatment, driver will pick them up and drop them home. Volunteer expenses are paid. TOPIC • 15 February, 2018 District Notes - Nótaí na gCeantar NOTES 25 STREETE SRÁID BOHERQUILL RAMBLERS The Ramblers visited Derrycassin Wood, north of Granard, on 04 February. The woods are just part of what was once a large estate owned by the Dropping Heppenstall family but Coillte are now the owners. Their work in developing the woods was on show in the beautiful sunny weather with great views of Lough Gowna through the trees. On Sunday, 18 February the Ramblers will walk in Ballymahon. Cars will leave Boherquill at 1.30pm and meet at the Cattle Mart in Ballymahon at 2pm for an 8km road and canal towpath walk. Annual Memberships are now due at €20 each or €30 for a family which is great value for a full year's walks. See boherquillramblers.ie for this and much more information. STREETE WILDLIFE CLUB The club are holding a game tasting night on Friday, 09 March in the Crossroads Inn, Lisryan. There will be a selection of game food available on the night. There will also be a raffle for some valuable prizes and Olivia Douglas will be providing the music. All are welcome and the proceeds from the night will be donated to Longford/Westmeath palliative care. The club Spring Clay Shooting League got underway last Thursday night with over sixty shooters taking part, and the shoots are every Thursday evening from 7pm to 9pm until 29 March. SUNDAY WALK A very enjoyable walk was had last Sunday morning despite the snow and the cold. Our walk took us to Streete Wildlife Club house where the members put on a cup of tea and a snack. Seamus Denning filled us in on the gun club’s past history. Pat Denning and the members took us on a tour of the grounds. Joe Kelly showed us how the traps worked and shot some clays out of the sky for all to see his marksmanship. On behalf of the walking group we would sincerely like to thank the Streete Wildlife Club. Next week's walk will take us around Correally. Meeting at the Parish Park at 11am. SENIOR CITIZENS PARTY The date for the Senior Citizens Party unfortunately happens to fall on Mother's day. Due to this, the committee has decided to change that. A new date will be agreed at this week's committee meeting and will be announced in next week's notes. Because of the date change, the walk that was organised to fundraise for this event has also been changed. This will also be decided and announced in next week's notes. STREETE BOWLS All four of our teams were in action this week at the Streete Complex. Streete A had a comprehensive win against Athlone. Streete B played against Tyrrellspass B. Despite winning one game and drawing the other two, Streete lost out on the bonus point by three points to two. On the same night, Streete C and D went head to head. After four close games the C team came out on top. Streete C Team one: Pat Purcell, Tom Connell and Pat Kelly. Team two: Francis Butler, Bob Madge and Sean Flood. The draw for the Basil Sullivan cup is next week. Further details later. New and lapsed members are welcome. SOCIAL DANCE Our next social dancing event takes place on Friday, 16 February. Music by the well-known Olivia Douglas and a great night’s entertainment is guaranteed. Dancing is from 10pm to 12 midnight, with supper and free raffle on the night. TRACTOR RUN A tractor run in aid of the Agricultural Show Society takes place on Sunday, 25 February, starting from Granard Farmers mart. Registration for the run commences at 11am in the mart. Children make sure you have your tractors ready in time and bring Mammy along for the fun! Refreshments will be served on the day and there will be a raffle and prizes on the day. It is hoped this change will give the opportunity to the farming community and to the many vintage enthusiasts to attend both events. AGM is 8 p.m. ELIZABETH CARTER Elizabeth (Betty) Carter (née Finn), a resident of Glenidan, Collinstown, died peacefully on Thursday, February 1st, in the loving care of the nurses and staff of the Inny Unit, Cluain Lir Care Centre, Mullingar. The deceased lady thereafter, reposed at the residence of her son Des, located at Glenidan, Collinstown, on Saturday, February 3rd from 1 p.m. until the commencing of prayers at 4 p.m. Following the conclusion of prayers, the funeral cortege departed, finishing its journey at 5 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church, Collinstown, where prayers were said by the mourners in attendance. On the following day, Sunday, February 4th, the funeral Mass of Elizabeth Carter was celebrated in that same church, commencing at 11.30 a.m. Afterwards, the deceased lady was laid to rest at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Collinstown. Predeceased by her husband Desmond (Des), in Septemeber 2009 and her daughter-in-law Jacqui, in May 2011, Elizabeth Carter is mourned by her sons; John, Des and Martin, sisters; Bridie, Carmel and Philomena, brothers; Eddie and Pat, daughtersin-law: Mags and Ita, grandchildren; Emma, Niamh, Aine and Darragh, other relations, neighbours and friends.
