Muhammadu Buhari,<br />

yesterday, <strong>in</strong> Abuja said the<br />

era of Boko Haram terrorism<br />

w<strong>as</strong> gradually draw<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

end, with the narrow<strong>in</strong>g of the<br />

recruitment b<strong>as</strong>e of the<br />

<strong>in</strong>surgents, and renewed<br />

onslaught by Nigerian Army.<br />

The President spoke on a<br />

day his M<strong>in</strong>ister of<br />

Information and Culture,<br />

Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said<br />

the Federal Government w<strong>as</strong><br />

develop<strong>in</strong>g narratives and<br />

communication strategies to<br />

completely dismantle and<br />

neutralise Boko Haram<br />

violent ideology and<br />

messages.<br />

Receiv<strong>in</strong>g the Letter of<br />

Credence of Apostolic Nuncio<br />

of the Holy See to Nigeria,<br />

Antonio Filipazzi, at State<br />

House, President Buhari said<br />

the terrorist group had lost<br />

appeal <strong>in</strong> its <strong>in</strong>itial<br />

strongholds, necessitat<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

steady retreat that would<br />

eventually culm<strong>in</strong>ate <strong>in</strong><br />

end<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>surgency.<br />

He said: “You can’t<br />

<strong>in</strong>doctr<strong>in</strong>ate people who are<br />

below the age of 14 years and<br />

blow up churches, mosques,<br />

markets and you keep<br />

shout<strong>in</strong>g God is great.<br />

“It is either you don’t know<br />

what you are say<strong>in</strong>g, or you<br />

simply don’t care or believe<br />

what you are say<strong>in</strong>g. It is part<br />

of our success story that Boko<br />

Haram is f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g it more<br />

difficult to recruit people.<br />

“The Nigerian Army is also<br />

not mak<strong>in</strong>g it e<strong>as</strong>y for them<br />

to grow, with more<br />

<strong>in</strong>telligence, orientation and<br />

regular, me<strong>as</strong>ured onslaught<br />

on their camps.’’<br />

The president said the<br />

ongo<strong>in</strong>g effort to dismember<br />

the terrorist group, and render<br />

it completely powerless<br />

would be <strong>in</strong>tensified.<br />

Buhari, who described the<br />

Catholic Church <strong>as</strong> a strong<br />

partner <strong>in</strong> the development<br />

of Nigeria, noted that the<br />

church had made very<br />

significant contributions to the<br />

development of the<br />

educational and health<br />

system of the country.<br />

In his remarks, Filipazzi<br />

said Pope Francis had taken<br />

a keen <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> the fight<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st terrorism, corruption<br />

and reviv<strong>in</strong>g of the Nigerian<br />

economy.<br />

out-of-court settlement with EFCC<br />

FORMER First Lady,<br />

Mrs Patience Jonathan,<br />

appears to be tired of<br />

fight<strong>in</strong>g Economic and<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ancial Crimes<br />

Commission, EFCC, <strong>in</strong><br />

court and h<strong>as</strong> <strong>as</strong>ked for an<br />

out-of-court settlement.<br />

In a January 30, 2018<br />

letter, entitled, “Proposal<br />

for out-of-court settlement<br />

of all c<strong>as</strong>es related to Dame<br />

(Mrs.) Ibifaka Patience<br />

Jonathan,” Mrs. Jonathan<br />

told the EFCC of her<br />

<strong>in</strong>tention to settle the<br />

matter, the News Agency of<br />

Nigeria reported yesterday.<br />

The letter, which w<strong>as</strong><br />

written by her counsel,<br />

Ifedayo Adedipe, is be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

considered by the EFCC.<br />

The letter said: “As senior<br />

counsel, represent<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Jonathan (former First<br />

Lady) and companies<br />

l<strong>in</strong>ked to her and some<br />

family members, <strong>as</strong>sociates,<br />

The news agency, NAN,<br />

said the letter came <strong>as</strong><br />

EFCC stumbled on more<br />

startl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation on<br />

how Mrs. Jonathan piled<br />

up dollar deposits <strong>in</strong> Skye<br />

and First banks, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

how she lavished part of the<br />

money.<br />

appo<strong>in</strong>tments <strong>in</strong> Nigerian<br />

National Petroleum<br />

Corporation, NNPC.<br />

The suit, which w<strong>as</strong> lodged<br />

before the court by a<br />

constitutional lawyer, Mr.<br />

Johnmary Jideobi, h<strong>as</strong> been<br />

<strong>as</strong>signed to Justice Ahmed<br />

Mohammed for hear<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Aside President Buhari,<br />

other defendants <strong>in</strong> the suit<br />

marked FHC/ABJ/CS/990/<br />

2017 are Group Manag<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Director of NNPC, Dr.<br />

Maikanti Baru; NNPC, and<br />

Senate probes scarcity of lower<br />

denom<strong>in</strong>ation currency notes<br />

why banks <strong>in</strong> Nigeria no<br />

longer dispense lower<br />

naira denom<strong>in</strong>ations, with<br />

the excuse that they hardly<br />

receive them from the<br />

Central Bank of Nigeria,<br />

CBN.<br />

Consequently, the Senate<br />

warned that if the situation<br />

w<strong>as</strong> not remedied urgently,<br />

it might lead to total<br />

collapse of the economy.<br />

Aga<strong>in</strong>st this backdrop,<br />

the Senate mandated its<br />

Committee on Bank<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

Insurance and Other<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ancial Institutions, led<br />

by Senator Rafiu Adebayo<br />

Ibrahim (APC, Kwara<br />

South) to urgently carry out<br />

a holistic <strong>in</strong>vestigation <strong>in</strong>to<br />

the matter, with a view to<br />

proffer<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>as</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g solution<br />

on the matter and report<br />

back with<strong>in</strong> two weeks.<br />

Resolution of the Senate,<br />

yesterday, w<strong>as</strong> sequel to a<br />

motion by Senator Peter<br />

Nwaoboshi (PDP, Delta<br />

North), entitled “Scarcity of<br />

Lower Denom<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

Currency Notes.”<br />

Present<strong>in</strong>g the motion,<br />

Nwaoboshi said: “The<br />

Senate notes with serious<br />

concern, protracted scarcity<br />

of lower Naira<br />

denom<strong>in</strong>ations.<br />

“It is concerned that<br />

scarcity of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100<br />

and 200 naira notes poses<br />

a severe threat to the<br />

economy of the nation,<br />

which is just recover<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from recession, <strong>as</strong> it is<br />

worsen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>flationary<br />

trends, with attendant<br />

consequences;<br />

“It notes that the nation’s<br />

currency is highly essential<br />

and critical <strong>in</strong> national<br />

development and if<br />

mismanaged, the economy<br />

is doomed with adverse<br />

effect on the people and the<br />

nation;<br />

“It is worried that banks<br />

<strong>in</strong> Nigeria no longer<br />

dispense lower naira<br />

denom<strong>in</strong>ations with the<br />

excuse that they hardly<br />

receive them from the<br />

Central Bank of Nigeria,<br />

CBN."<br />

Boko Haram: Shekau on<br />

the run dressed <strong>as</strong><br />

woman —Army<br />

Nigerian Army said,<br />

yesterday, that Abubakar<br />

Shekau, factional leader of<br />

Boko Haram terrorists group,<br />

h<strong>as</strong> fled the Sambisa forest,<br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g its troops’ <strong>in</strong>tense<br />

raid <strong>in</strong> the area to completely<br />

dislodge the terrorists.<br />

But the Army said the<br />

terrorists’ leader disguised <strong>as</strong><br />

a woman to <strong>flee</strong> the area.<br />

The troops of Operation<br />

Lafiya Dole, <strong>in</strong> statement<br />

relayed to the media through<br />

Army spokesman, Brigadier-<br />

General Sani Usman, said<br />

Shekau w<strong>as</strong> on the run,<br />

disguis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>as</strong> a woman <strong>in</strong><br />

different hijab attires.<br />

It said credible <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

from surrendered <strong>in</strong>surgents<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicated that the factional<br />

leader of the group could not<br />

susta<strong>in</strong> the tempo of the heat<br />

of the ongo<strong>in</strong>g counter<strong>in</strong>surgency<br />

go<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>in</strong> the<br />

forest.<br />

Usman added that the<br />

troops also rescued civilians<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g held hostages by the<br />

terrorists and recovered arms,<br />

ammunition, improvised<br />

explosives devices, IEDs,<br />

mak<strong>in</strong>g materials <strong>as</strong> well <strong>as</strong><br />

other equipment.<br />

The statement read: “The<br />

concerted efforts of troops of<br />

Operation Lafiya Dole on the<br />

ongo<strong>in</strong>g clearance of the<br />

Boko Haram terrorists<br />

through Operation Deep<br />

Punch II h<strong>as</strong> been yield<strong>in</strong>g<br />

tremendous results.<br />

“Credible <strong>in</strong>formation from<br />

arrested and surrendered<br />

<strong>in</strong>surgents <strong>in</strong>dicated that the<br />

purported Boko Haram<br />

terrorists group factional<br />

leader, Abubakar Shekau,<br />

could not bear the heat<br />

anymore <strong>as</strong> he h<strong>as</strong><br />

abandoned his followers, he<br />

“He is desperately try<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to escape the theatre<br />

disguised <strong>as</strong> a woman<br />

dressed <strong>in</strong> Hijab. We<br />

reliably gathered that to<br />

avoid detection, Abubakar<br />

Shekau alternates between<br />

blue and black coloured<br />

hijabs".
