Local Life - Wigan - March 2018

Wigan's FREE local lifestyle magazine.

37 Water great legacy David Sudworth meets the man who helped erase the scars of industrialisation from Wigan’s landscape... John Harris remembers the day he knew Wigan had to shake itself out of its postindustrial slumber. “I was travelling home on a train and the chap behind me told his girlfriend that it was apparent we were approaching Wigan because of the slag heaps and dereliction – it was hurtful yet truthful.” This was the reality of everyday life for thousands in the 1970s. While TV channels beamed out images in glorious technicolor for the first time, Wigan’s landscape was decidedly monochrome by comparison. Hundreds of years of heavy industrialisation had made the town a thriving centre for coal production, but at the same time it had severely scarred its landscape.
