Page 10 YORKTOWN CRIER • THE POQUOSON POST, FEBRUARY 15TH-21ST, 2018 The first thing I recall being taught about curiosity was that it has a lethal effect on cats. No one ever produced a dead cat to verify the claim, but the lesson was clear. Curiosity was dangerous, and we shouldn’t adopt feline proclivities as a pattern for life. After all, look what happened to “Catwoman”—a grownup running around at night dressed up like a cat. How embarrassing. No wonder she wore a mask. An incident during my early high school days that had nothing to do with cats shed a bit more pragmatic light on Church Directory The York-Poquoson church page is brought to you as a public service by these area businesses Bethel Baptist Church 1004 Yorktown Rd., Tabb 867-8082 IHOP 5518 Rt. 17, Grafton 369-4937 Joe and Mimma’s 5742 Geo Wash Mem Hwy, Yorktown 898-6612 Coxton’s Gold Team Collision Center 1609 Rt. 17 York County 596-3220 Night 890-4219 Hampton-Veterans Memorial Gardens 155 Butler Farm Road, Hampton 766-1063 All Nations Church 853 Cloverleaf Ln. It began with an unintentional glance that altered my interest in hair. It was just another bright fall afternoon being wasted in a boring freshman class. My only conscious desire was for the bell to ring and set us free. As my eyes drifted around the room, one of the girls came into focus. She was sitting next to the window. and the afternoon sunlight made her hair look almost like it was glowing. She was suddenly, inexplicably hypnotic and irresistible, and I couldn’t stop looking at her. As I sat trapped and defenseless, a parade of disturbing questions went through my head . . . “What’s going on, and why have I not noticed her before?” “Why am I thinking about talking to her, and what in the world would I say?” “Why does everything I think of saying sound so stupid?” “Why did I wear this funky looking shirt?” “If I can imagine Victory Dental 119 Village Ave, Suite C. A Curious Thing About Love her being bald, will everything feel normal again?” “Why is this so hard?” That mesmerizing afternoon came and went, leaving no “happily ever after” in its wake, but it did leave a valuable illustration. The unique process that evolves into what we customarily define as “love” brings with it more probing questions than obvious answers. No single issue in the scope of human experience has generated more curiosity and more questions than the concept of love. What is it? Why does it exist? What does it mean? How do we define it? Can I trust it? How long will it last? What if I offer it and they don’t love me back? What does it include? What if it dies? There are many curious things about love, but one of the most intriguing is its capacity for creating endless curiosity. It’s not accidental that love seems most exciting, and its attraction most powerful, at those stages where curiosity and the questions that attend it are the most prominent. Love, whether human or divine, extends both the challenge to “know” and the invitation to be known, to transcend the externals and explore the deepest recesses of our minds and hearts. Love offers the most stimulating and fulfilling experiences available to human beings, and it’s tragic if that capacity is relegated to the early stages alone. Love’s most powerful moments are intertwined with questions that captivate our heart, and its life is in jeopardy when that kind of curiosity fades. When the desire to know more and the questions that feed it stop coming, attention is re-directed and love begins to cool. Its demise is imminent the moment we think we already know everything that we want to know, or that can be known, about someone. “Love,” then, begins to become a wooden thing with no more tan- By Ronald Gallagher talizing secrets to reveal and no more adventures to offer. Relationships become dried, empty shells — little more than mummified replicas of what they once were, preserved only by boring rituals wrapped around what was once exciting and full of life and promise. Extended exposure is not what delivers the fatal blow to curiosity. It’s the arrogant assumption that we know it all. But there’s hope. We can set aside our pride and take another look, and the God who created us with the capacity to love in the first place, can resurrect it. He designed us with depth we can never fully explore and boundless capacity for the qualities that make life the best it can be. It’s insulting if we look at Him or one another and think there’s nothing more to learn. We can approach our love relationships with the Apostle Paul’s attitude.
