Floyd’s county seat, Rome, sits at the juncture of the Etowah and Oostanaula rivers as the two join to form the Coosa and lies on the ancient site of Chiaha. Hernando de Soto referenced Chiaha in his travels. After the Civil War, the communities of Armuchee and Coosa found economic strength in the lumber industry. In addition, cotton became central to trade and industry, and such communities as Lindale and Shannon thrived in the growing textile market. The Coosa River took cotton 200 miles to the south, and the Oostanaula River carried it 100 miles to the north. Cotton from Floyd County also found its way to British textile mills. In recent years, the medical field has become a primary economic force for the county. Two major hospitals and a cardiovascular center are located in Floyd County, and the county has become the center for medical care in northwest Georgia and northeast Alabama. (Williamson, N.M. “Floyd County.” New Georgia Encyclopedia. 07 December 2016. Web. 20 December 2017.) The Floyd County Board of Commissioners is a group of dedicated, public spirited individuals who together are committed to maximizing resources and improving the quality of life in Floyd County. The Board is composed of five (5) members. Any person offering for elections as a member of the board must designate the post which they are seeking. Floyd County is a Council-Manager form of government, and the County Manager is appointed by the Board to oversee all functions, directives, and policies. Paris Lake at Georgia Highlands College
