The play is heartwarming and the analysis of love is frank and inspirational. Rusty Ruth Love shows up in some funny places. It even makes an appearance at an emergency bus stop during a blinding snowstorm in Kansas in the middle of the night in William Inge’s play “Bus Stop.” The show will be on stage at the Spencer Community Theatre Feb. 23- 25 and March 2-4. The show is set in a diner a ways outside Kansas City in early March 1955. A snowstorm in the middle of the night has forced a bus and its five passengers to wait out the weather at the diner with the three people who work there. Some of the characters are complete strangers and some have previous relationships. The show follows the characters as love or what looks like love is found at the bus stop. The show is a popular one that they are very excited about bringing to the stage. “We decided to do ‘Bus Stop’ because we fell in love with the story of people trying to make sense of love while being snowbound in a cafe,” said Rusty Ruth, the executive artistic director for the Spencer Community Theatre. “It is has been favorite by many audiences for years and we thought it would be a perfect fit for our season.” The cast began rehearsing in January and is composed of veterans to the Spencer Community Theatre stage as well as some newbies. One of those newbies is Ruth himself. “The cast has a nice mixture of veteran SCT actors and newcomers to the SCT stage. Roger Partridge, Mark Joenks, Vonnie Hinrichsen, Abbie Hinrichsen and Ethan Johnson have been involved on stage either through SCT’s Mainstage season, Second Season or Deegan’s Children’s Season, while myself, Colin Van Westen and Hanna Russmann are making their SCT debuts,” Ruth said. In addition to watching the actors onstage there will be some other elements of the performance that Ruth is excited for the audience to experience. “Personally, I excited for audiences to really experience the feeling of a spring blizzard in Kansas, through the use of technical elements,” Ruth said. “Using snow effects and realistic sound cues really helps enhance the excellent acting, and helps the audience lose themselves in the world we are creating. I’m excited to see their reaction.” “Bus Stop” is a show that will hopefully leave the audience in a happy mood. “I’m hoping audiences will leave feeling good about themselves. The play is heartwarming and the analysis of love is frank and inspirational,” Ruth said. “I’m hoping the audience will enjoy the fine mixture of dramatic and comedic moments.” F Spencer | Iowa
