Sunday, March 18, 2018 • 9:00 a.m. to noon Schechter Westchester’s Dr. Elliot Spiegel Lower School WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS SCRATCH! LEARN TO CODE Curious-on-Hudson Grade Level: K only Students will be introduced to the logic of coding and programming through SCRATCH, the coding language developed by MIT for children. Through use of a graphical, drag-and-drop interface, students learn how to create simple programs that are fun, animated, and personalized. DISCOVER CAMP RUBE GOLDBERG CREATORS: CHAIN REACTIONS Discover Camp Grade Level: K-1 Did you love the game Mouse Trap when you were a child? We did, too. In this workshop, the children will build small contraptions that introduce them to simple machines. Rube Goldberg was a cartoonist with a crazy imagination who drew overly complicated inventions to perform a simple operation. INVENTION CONVENTION Curious-on-Hudson Grade Level: K-2 Design and model an original invention out of random objects and raw materials. Kids are given creative license to solve challenges in their own ways, using their own ideas to form design solutions. STEM FAIRYTALE PROGRAM: STRAWS, STICKS, AND BRICKS Westchester Children’s Museum Grade Level: K-2 Students will design homes made of straws, popsicle sticks, and bricks (Legos) to see which structure will withstand the Big Bad Wolf’s huffing and puffing (a hair dryer camouflaged as the wolf!). WIND TUBE CHALLENGE Westchester Children’s Museum Grade Level: K-2 Little engineers will learn the first steps of how things fly and how the first airplane was invented. Students will then experiment with materials to make their own flying machines in our mobile MakerSpace wind tube. THE SCIENCE OF OZ Westchester Children’s Museum Grade Level: K-2 Students explore story elements from the classic tale, The Wizard of Oz as it relates to weather, color, solids, liquids, and solubility. Students create a vortex, in this case, a tornado; demonstrate the refraction, bending, and separating of light to make colors with a prism; and create their own “Rainbow Tube” to take home. The final fun of this workshop will be “dissolving” a witch.
